Big news coming from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)! 🌳 They have announced that energy attribute certificates (EACs) will be able to be used towards the abatement of Scope 3 emissions. 📈 SBTi sees this as speeding up the process of reducing carbon in value chains through compensation, while companies work on eliminating carbon emissions at the source with innovation and better technology. 📝 This means that, with proper support from evidence-based policies, standards and procedures, EACs could serve as an extra tool in combating climate change through Scope 3 emissions abatement. 🥅 SBTi will set clear rules and standards for environmental attribute certificates to be valid for reducing Scope 3 emissions, following the principles of mitigation hierarchy. They said: "SBTi will not embark in validating carbon credits quality. Other entities are better positioned to deal with this activity. SBTi will enable all validating entities to have clear access and complete understanding of the demand side guardrails and rules established by SBTi for this purpose." ⏳ Updated guidance is expected to be published in July of this year, which will give rules and guidelines on the types of EACs that can be used and the rules around reporting.
