From 7th to 13th October is Bone Cancer Awareness Week. The perfect time to raise awareness about this rare but aggressive form of cancer that affects both children and adults. Bone cancer can be challenging to detect early, as symptoms like pain and swelling are often mistaken for common injuries. This week let's share stories of those impacted by bone cancer and spread awareness to others. Check out this helpful guide by Bone Cancer Research Trust. Don't forget there are oodles of resources on the Yorkshire Cancer Community website too. https://lnkd.in/eVUqMbYP #bonecancerawareness #bonecancerawarenessweek #yorkshirecancercommunity #cancersmart #cancersupportyorkshire #knowyournormal #cancerresourcesyorkshire #canceryorkshire #cancercommunity #cancersupport

October brings the 'Don't be the One' Campaign alongside Black History Month and Liver Cancer Awareness Month. The 10th October is the official launch of the campaign and Cancer Champions Phil James and Stephen Halstead are leading the campaign which we will launch in Huddersfield at the Chestnut Community Centre, Ashbrow. Phil, the founder of Kam’s Corner CIC, a group which empowers the black community to improve their health and wellbeing and Stephen who was diagnosed with prostate cancer, are both passionate about raising awareness. This is particularly important in the black community, as 1 in 4 black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Black men are at twice the risk of other men who have a 1 in 8 chance of getting prostate cancer. We don’t know why there is an increased risk, but it could be linked to genetics. • You may also be more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or brother has had it • Or your mother or sister has had breast cancer Our friends at Liver Buddies will also be there to support the event. We would be over the moon if you could join us! Any questions please email us at info@yorkshirecancercommunity.co.uk. #blackhistorymonth #dontbetheone #yorkshirecancercommunity #cancersmart #cancersupportyorkshire #knowyournormal #cancerresourcesyorkshire #westyorkshirecancersupport #livingwithcancer #livercancerawarenessmonth #liverbuddies

At this week's support group leaders network meeting, we were talking about the @prostatecanceruk Campaign Bog Standard with phs Group , to improve the standard of men’s toilets and increase the provision of sanitary bins within men’s toilets. The toilet should be a safe space. PHS & PCUK want men living with incontinence to feel confident and supported, whether they are in their workplace or out and about socialising with family and friends. That’s why BOG STANDARD has been created, a set of guidelines designed to educate and ensure businesses and the public sector are providing men with the facilities they need to dispose of incontinence waste with dignity. You can find facilities by downloading the 'flush toilet finder' app for your phone! 💛🎗️ September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️💛 Every day, thousands of families face the heart-wrenching reality of childhood cancer. This month, we come together to raise awareness, support ongoing research, and stand with the brave children and families affected by this devastating disease. 🚸 This year in the UK, around 70 children will be diagnosed with primary bone cancer 🌟 This month, let’s shine a light on the heroes—the children, their families, the medical staff, and researchers—fighting for brighter futures. Together, we can make a difference by advocating for increased funding, spreading awareness, and offering hope. 💛 #GoGold to support childhood cancer awareness and help spread the message. Every share, every conversation, every donation counts. Let's fight for cures and give every child the chance to grow up. We'd love for you to meet Lucy (thank you to Bone Cancer Research Trust for sharing this story with us) “She became the youngest patient at the time to be fitted with a growing prosthesis.” – Helga, Lucy’s mum Lucy has always been a very active child. So, when she informed her teacher that her leg ached too much to take part in her favourite ‘daily mile’ exercise activity, alarm bells began ringing. As a nurse and cancer survivor, Helga knew something was wrong, and immediately called the GP. Aged 7, Lucy was referred to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, where she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. If you'd like to know more about how you can support this charity, pop along to their page to find out more. #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #MoreThan4 #GoldStrong #yorkshirecancercommunity #cancersmart #cancersupportyorkshire #knowyournormal #cancerresourcesyorkshire #canceryorkshire #cancercommunity
