Supporting life after the loss of a young adult

About us

‘You Raise Me Up’ charity based in Eastbourne, are one of the only national charity's who offer financial and emotional support to families who have sadly lost a child between the ages of 16 and 25. Founded in June 2011 with the sole purpose of raising funds to support these families. On 3rd May 2011 our founders Jane and Fraser lost their beautiful 17 year old daughter, Megan Brooks. Megan suddenly collapsed and died at Eastbourne Rugby Club, just 9 days before her 18th birthday. Megan’s parents and her brother Oliver, were traumatised and trying to pick up the pieces of their lives whilst stumbling through the aftershock, they felt they had little or no guidance or support other than from family and close friends. Those first few days and weeks dealing with their loss and grief, whilst coping with the immediate demands of arranging a funeral were emotionally and financially challenging. How do you recover from the loss of a child? The pain and sorrow is incomprehensible. They knew after their experience how valuable and supportive it would have been had there been help available like our charity. We are sad that the need is there, yet encouraged and comforted to know that the charity has helped so many families who have struggled not only with the funeral costs, but through the charity’s counselling service, offering emotional support as they re-build their lives. We offer help to local families and families further afield as well as peers of the deceased. The importance of mental health awareness is paramount to our work and therefore we also offer a 24 hour helpline service which has become increasingly utilised over the 10 years the charity has been established. The helpline is manned 24 hours a day by trained counsellors. Our Support Centre is an essential drop in centre for anyone who needs emotional support. It is a safe place where people can go when need somewhere to turn and someone to talk to who "understands".

What a fabulous evening we had at the launch of the Groombridge Women's Institute centenary charity calendar raising money for us here at You Raise Me Up! The 13 brave ladies posed semi-naked for a wonderful calendar ahead of their 100th anniversary next year and it was sponsored by local businesses. The calendars are available at the Village Post Office, Groombridge, and are £15. Thanks so much for having us at the launch and for choosing us as your charity 💕 #groombridgewi #youraisemeup

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: We regret to inform you that You Raise Me Up Support Centre and Coffee Shop will cease to trade as a coffee shop from October 2024. The last trading day will be Saturday 28th September 2024. Despite our best efforts to sustain this part of the Charity, difficult economic circumstances and the ongoing roadworks have resulted in us having to make this difficult decision. The premises will still operate as a support centre and the charity will continue supporting families. However, these premises will not be open to the public until we have completed the transition. We will make an announcement once we are able to do so. We would like to thank our wonderful customers for their support over the years and we all feel very sad that it has come to this. Trustees and YRMU Team.

🌅Memories at Sunset 2024🌅 We want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for our first Memories at Sunset event on Friday night! It was incredibly moving to see so many beautiful lanterns, each uniquely decorated in memory of loved ones, lighting up the evening as we watched the sunset together. We’re thrilled to announce that an amazing £4,113 was raised for our charity! 🎉 This incredible amount will help us continue providing the essential support to families after the loss of a young adult aged 16-25. A huge shoutout to our fantastic photographer, Hannah Richards Photography, for capturing these beautiful moments! 📸 To Seven Sisters Country Park for allowing us to host our event in such a stunning location. To Stephen Rimmer LLP for sponsoring the event. To our dedicated volunteers who helped on the night, and St John Ambulance for being there as our first aiders. Stay tuned—lots more pictures are coming soon! 🌟 Thank you for making this night so special! 💛
