A 5-page CV for a 2-page role. It happens more often than you’d think. I was working with a seasoned Account Director whose CV was 5 pages long. After 20+ years with the same company, they wanted to showcase everything. But when we looked at the expectations for the industry, role, and country, we found that 2 pages were the standard. Their next question: "How do I cut it down from 5 pages to 2?" My answer? Focus on what’s relevant for the role you’re applying for. Here’s what we did: ☑️ Trimmed down older experience. Work from 5+ years ago wasn’t as important unless it directly related to the role. ☑️ Highlighted achievements and results that were most relevant. ☑️ Removed outdated skills and software that no longer added value. ☑️ Kept it concise, focusing only on what mattered for the position they were targeting. "How long should my CV be?" That’s the first question a seasoned Account Director asked me recently. After over 20 years with the same company, they’d been made redundant and were struggling to gain any traction with their applications. They said, “Everyone I ask gives me a different answer.” Here’s what I explained: The length of your CV depends on several factors: - Industry - Country - Role - Career stage For example, here's how CV length can vary: 💼 Intern roles: A solid one-pager. 💼 Marketing: For mid-senior roles, 2 pages are standard. Concise, results-focused CVs are key. 💼 Education (Lecturer): In academia, CVs are often longer—3–5 pages—because of publications and research projects. Before rewriting your CV, research the expectations for the country, industry, and role you’re applying to. Here’s a rule of thumb: Your CV should tell the right story in the right amount of time.
