About us

Youth Futures Foundation is the What Work’s Centre for youth employment. We aim to narrow employment gaps for young people facing the greatest challenges by identifying what works and why and investing in evidence generation to improve policy and practice. Everything we do is guided by robust evidence of what works to support young people from marginalised backgrounds into good jobs. We learn from the projects we fund and scale up that learning to drive genuine, long-lasting systemic change

Do you have evidence on what works to promote EDI in the workplace? The Institute for Employment Studies (IES) are working with us to collate evidence on what works to promote employer action and behaviour change in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), with a particular focus on young people from Black, Pakistani and Bangladeshi backgrounds. To capture the existing evidence, IES will systematically interrogate relevant materials in the public domain. But, we know there will be good quality evidence that may not be publicly available. If you have evidence that you’d like to recommend, we’d love to know about it. Find out more about what we’re looking for and how to submit evidence, before Thursday 31 October: https://lnkd.in/ehizRqnA

We recently released our Mentoring Toolkit Unwrapped, a practical resource to help employers offer meaningful mentoring programmes for young people. Today, Fergus Hynd from National Grid tells us about the Grid for Good Programme, designed to help socioeconomically disadvantaged young people into employment. “The young people we work with may have complex challenges such as mental health conditions or special educational needs…Being able to help a young person from one of these cohorts into the workplace, creates a relatable role model for others who follow in their footsteps. That can spark real change in a community.” If you’re thinking about setting up a mentoring programme to help underrepresented talent to thrive in your organisation, hear more from Fergus about the successes at National Grid. https://lnkd.in/eB6eGdxr And find more practical tips in our Mentoring Toolkit Unwrapped https://lnkd.in/e-AbaM8H

Today's labour market statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the number of unemployed young people remains high. Dr Andrea Barry, Principal Economist at Youth Futures Foundation, comments: “The latest data from the ONS Labour Market statistics reveal a concerning trend of persistent youth unemployment, with over 12.6% of UK youth aged 16-24 out of full-time education currently unemployed. Additionally, 20.2% young people not in full-time education are economically inactive. "These figures further highlight the scale of the challenge to achieve the Prime Minister's ambitious goal to eradicate youth unemployment, which he set out at Labour Party Conference. It remains achievable in the long-term, and we agree that initiatives like the Youth Guarantee are a crucial first step. "As co-chairs of the Youth Employment Group, we have strongly supported the Youth Guarantee as a solution to address the significant issue of young people not in employment or education. We stand eager to continue our work with Government, partners, and young people to make this a reality."
