Architecture and Planning
A multidisciplinary practice with work ranging from award-winning buildings to master-planning and regeneration projects
About us
ZCD Architects is a multidisciplinary practice, run by Dinah Bornat and Cordula Weisser, our work ranges from award-winning buildings to masterplanning and regeneration. Creative, rigorous, innovative and playful we deliver projects across the public and private sectors – always motivated by our commitment to high quality design with a social purpose. Our people-centred approach puts our clients and their needs at the heart of everything we do, whether we are creating a beautiful new home, or advocating for the involvement of young people in the design of our cities. The practice offers architectural design, urban design and research services. We can deliver a full package from community engagement, masterplanning and urban design advice, through to design development and delivery. Our experience in designing and delivering high quality, award winning buildings means we are able to provide full architectural services on new projects on a range of sizes. We have a particular expertise in gaining planning permission and funding for new proposals in sensitive locations and tight sites. Our fresh approach to urban design in residential schemes means we can help shape new projects with a view to meeting policy objectives. We are dedicated to working with our clients to create high quality developments that will meet the needs of their communities now and into the future. Our extensive research into Child Friendly Cities means we are leading UK experts, influencing policy nationally and in London. We have worked with the Homes and Communities Agency, UK Green Building Council on their report 'Health and Wellbeing in Homes', NHBC Foundation and others. ZCD Architects was formed in 2013, by Zoe Smith, Cordula Weisser and Dinah Bornat. In 2017 ZCD very sadly lost Zoe Smith. The practice remembers her careful, sensitive and dedicated approach to design. At ZCD Zoe was most widely recognised for the Hussein Chalayan clothing shop in Bourdon Street.

Check out this article by Magali Thomson, making a case to look beyond the red boundary site line, and to make a collaborative effort to tackle neglected streets, shared space and public realm in London. A massive thank you for referencing the work of the Public Realm Inclusivity Panel we are facilitating with The Earls Court Development Company, and how this model can be applied in other public realm advisory panels to provide guidance on establishing effective partnerships, potential funding mechanisms, and efficient processes which enable change. If you'd like to learn more about how to use the Voice Opportunity Power Toolkit in a project, we have created a brand new case studies page as part of the website relaunch, where we show you a range of real life housing, mixed-use, open space, and high street projects all over the UK, demonstrating how the toolkit has been used in different ways to facilitate engagement. "We are Young Chingford" demonstrates how to use the toolkit on a town centre, starting with a really thorough investigation into the lived experience of children and young people to help define a brief for child friendly design proposals and borough wide strategic recommendations, providing new ways of thinking about town centre public space. Engaging with over 100 students from 3 local schools, activities included walking tours of the town centre, conducting a RAG analysis of the high street and producing a brief for the new town centre. We have been working on updating the Voice Opportunity Power Toolkit, a toolkit to involve young people in the making and managing of their neighbourhoods. As part of the relaunch, we have been working on a whole new session, which details how young people can be involved in the making and managing of these future neighbourhoods. With a focus on establishing impact of youth engagement beyond the sessions, discussing how youth-friendly community spaces are designed and managed and teaching young people skills to foster conversation between young people and their community, Session 6 demonstrates the importance of engagement beyond a planning submission. Where common engagement typically focuses on discussions about pre delivery, there is a great deal of opportunity to understand the experience of users in the spaces they will occupy post delivery, and whilst a new development might not be built for years, Session 6 sets participants up to think about it from this earlier stage. 💡Toolkit testing: Chicago Our final toolkit destination for our toolkit with the Van Leer Foundation will be at Chicago. We will be engaging with a community at an existing development called Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments, recently acquired and refurbished by Jonathan Rose Companies. Here lives a family mixed-income community, and the sessions will take place at their brand new Clubhouse, asking parents and carers about living in BJ Wright through mapping exercises, drawing exercises and thorough group discussions. As we're new to Chicago, it will be just as much us learning from them as they will be from us, and we can't wait to take our toolkit international and find out more about how to engage in new communities and contexts!

💡Toolkit testing: East Croydon The third destination for our toolkit testing with the Van Leer Foundation is East Croydon. HUB and Bridges Property Funds with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris have recently delivered Queen's Quarter, a development with 513 new homes and public realm in Queen's Gardens. We tested our toolkit there to see how parents and carers with children under 5 engage with the neighbourhood, their homes and the public realm in the wider context of East Croydon, before we zoomed back into the site at Queen's Quarter with AHMM. Stay tuned to learn about the findings and the destination for our final toolkit test...

ZCD ARCHITECTS LTD reposted this
Everyone should read this! 📣 https://lnkd.in/ejP2JkkP Amazing article by Dinah Bornat and the ZCD ARCHITECTS LTD team about the crucial importance of creating #neighbourhoods with #children and young #people at the very top of the #design hierarchy. Thank you for referencing our film, The White Flats (created with Anna Price and Rachel Stevenson) which demonstrates the lived experience of #residents of all ages at Highgate Newtown Phase 1, and how it really does work for children, young people, their #parents and #households of all types. You can watch the film here: https://lnkd.in/eBjUgPMd Thank you too to the Architects’ Journal for prioritising this issue and supporting all those in the profession who are leading this #conversation.
