Cracking Culture by business leader and entrepreneur Paula Mitchell is a book that tackles workplace culture and strives to explain why it should be a top priority for everyone who isn’t yet retired, employers and employees alike. Paula writes a short background to explain why she is qualified to write such a book, and I thought I would add my two pennorth on why I am excited to read it. It has always been obvious to me that Paula understands culture, I don’t mean she can quote sonnets and provide artful insight (although she may be able to), rather that she understands the group in which she occupies. A hugely perceptive individual, both on the personal and group level. Paula was Club Captain of a massive university sports club when I met her as an 18-year-old fresher and even then, she had presence, self-assurance, and confidence, but no arrogance. She would move the group along, start games or step back to let things flow as required. Connecting the people in a group in a positive and fun way was as much a priority for Paula then as it is now. This book stems from a lifetime of leadership dedicated to fostering supportive, inclusive and fun group culture. Knowing this, and knowing that recruiters have an amazing insight, essentially doing entrance and exit interviews across entire sectors to understand why people leave or stay in any given work environment, means I am stoked to read Cracking Culture. A recent survey result by Zenopa Recruitment, sent to me by Libby Messitt, showed the third most common reason for looking for a new position in the Life Sciences sector is to find an improved workplace culture. If you can crack the culture conundrum, you are well on your way to a happier, more profitable life.
