How do you decide which training IS or IS NOT a waste of your time, money or energy? In other words, how do you know you're investing in the right training for your career? Today I'm spending a day in training improving my negotiation skills by focusing on increasing influence and increasing the probability of successful negotiation. I surely see negotiation, as one of the top 10 skills women should master to accelerate their career growth. That made me think about how we, as women invest into our career developement? Are we intentional about the training choices? Do we consider the return on investment before investing? Here is my take on it. I see this with my clients and at work. For professional women in their 30s and 40s, career satisfaction often plays a crucial role in overall happiness. At this stage in life, many women have invested significant TIME, ENERGY and MONEY into their careers, often wondering; How will I actually benefit from further trainings in my working life. Choosing the right training to support career growth is both strategic and deeply personal. At this stage in life, training needs to: ⭐ offer high-impact returns, ⭐ align with professional goals, ⭐ and address the unique challenges of balancing career progression with other life priorities. Here is what I would consider when consindering if I should sign up and invest into next training. 1. Aim for Tangible Outcomes and Visibility: If you’re investing time and money, look for training that offers expertise, credibility, capstone projects, or ways to apply skills directly within your role. These tangible outcomes not only bolster your resume but demonstrate to leadership your commitment to growth. 2. Evaluate Industry Relevance: Focus on areas where demand is growing. Research the competencies most in-demand in your field and invest in those that align with your growth goals. 3. Look for Hands-On Application: Theoretical knowledge is valuable, but training that includes real-world scenarios, case studies, or projects can be even more impactful. Practical application cements skills and can often showcase immediate value to your current team or prospective employers. By thoughtfully aligning training choices with both current needs and future ambitions, you’ll ensure each step you take is a solid investment in your growth. Understanding the return of your investment from training will make your training more impactful and relevant for your career growth. Is there anything else you'd add to the list?
