Last week our team had the pleasure of sharing our expertise into the dynamic Blockchain and Sustainability roundtable discussion, organised by CryptoUK and the #RegTechforum and hosted at B2C2 ‘s offices, where professionals from across the industry gathered to discover and talk about sustainability in the crypto sector. The event highlighted the need for Crypto Asset Service Providers (CASPs) to comply with MiCA’s new sustainability requirements—and, as we like to hear, to think beyond them. The conversation dug into the challenges of calculating scope three emissions and the role, accessibility and metrologies of data providers play in setting foundations crypto sustainability reporting. We also tackled the concept of limited issurance, auditability, and why the MiCA requirements are a key first step to encouraging the sector to do better. We shared our experience in navigating these complexities, helping CASPs not only meet the minimum regulatory requirements but also embed sustainable practices more deeply into their operations. The panel also explored the increasing demand for ethical digital assets from both consumers and institutions, and how this could drive greater adoption of sustainable practices across the industry. However, while there’s growing interest, the mass market still prioritises cost and functionality, meaning it’s up to regulatory guidance and industry leadership to make sustainability the norm. With MiCA deadlines looming, it was clear from the discussion that the crypto sector needs to work together—sharing knowledge, improving data reliability, and pushing the envelope on what’s possible in terms of environmental impact. We’re excited to continue collaborating with the industry to help make a more sustainable future for digital assets a reality. Thank you to all that made it possible and joined the discussion, Suzanne Morsfield, PhD CPA, Su Carpenter Rebecca Rogers, Chrislyn Pereira, Sebastian Dieguez Ciarán McGonagle
