I'm loving all the hype online around Waitrose' recent falling prices campaign which included an intentionally wonky billboard. Here are a few things I've learnt from this brilliantly executed branding campaign: 1. The execution exists beyond the creative - think big, and execute even BIGGER! 2. Any news is good news - create something disruptive that gets people talking. Even if it's from the overzealous council members 3. Keep your messaging clear and to the point - When customers feel bombarded, your strategy can misfire. Keep it simple 4. Location. Location. Location! Tell us you’ve never been to Manchester without telling us you’ve never been to Manchester 🙃 That’s exactly what Mancs thought the day THAT Magnum ad popped up claiming its ice cream was the only thing that could make lying on Piccadilly Gardens even better… But in-house creatives at On the Beach hit the nail on the head with a much more relatable reactive. Why did it work? They understood the nuances of local life… IYKYK This is a great reflection of our Mind the Gap research, which found regional gaps in the UK are widening, not narrowing. All Time Greats Don't Stop At Gold. Here's why Nike's new mural in Manchester works, from a copywriter 🖊 🥇 Less than a day after Manchester's own Keely Hodgkinson won gold, Nike installed this mural in the Northern Quarter As a writer, when words make me stop, I like to think about why Because not only is the artwork striking, the message on the left really lands for a few reasons: 1) On a surface level, the line is monosyllabic, alliterative and concise - all working to stick in your head 2) A clever call to action - in commending Keely, the message also subliminally encourages every reader to set high standards, and choose Nike to achieve those goals 3) Relevancy - a buzzword in DM at the moment, but this messaging aligns with Nike's own ethos of striving forward (as encapsulated in their own slogan placed below) 4) Brand image - the slogan, in conjunction with the image of Keely, reinforces Nike's image as a brand that supports athletes and customers who achieve great things

They say everyday's a school day. With that in mind, I've been pushing myself to take part in more courses and seminars. Last week was no different when I took part in Heidi Weinberg 's online freelancer training. Packed full of useful advice for freelancers from pitching to pricing and a whole load of encouragement (!) it was a great session with freelancers from around the world joining. My take away points from the session were: ⭐ Feeling more confident in writing winning pitches. ⭐ Utilising AI to help with the pitching process ⭐ Approaching freelancing with a ''Be, Do, Have'' attitude! Product packshots are bloody boring.. No-one will remember you if they are. Unless you develop your own style and stick to it. Brands like ASOS do this so well. I guarantee one thing: If you spot an ASOS packshot on your feed, you will recognise it immediately. They have cleverly developed their own style and stuck with it for years. I see so many excuses for brands not joining TikTok Shop. Mostly to do with content creation, the initial set up, resources but mostly lack of understanding… The statistics from brands especially health/cosmetics/beauty/FMCG in the last 6 weeks, let alone 6 months, is too much to ignore for any marketers / strategists. Brands like Plouise Makeup Academy Trigwell Cosmetics Mallows Beauty Made by Mitchell all operating their TikTok shops like *actual* shops and driving huge revenue numbers without any overheads associated with traditional bricks and mortar. 24 hour lives, giveaways, open from 8am-11pm, equalling 2 purchases every second… 🤯 Theres a reason why brands like ASOS.com and L'Oréal are joining. Commonality between these brands? Stocked in the biggest online retailers, they drive revenue through community via UGC and brand ambassadors (not single use influencer relationships) and events that bring their consumer into their world. Not huge ad spends (my guess is they could take or leave them…) because their customers do the advertising for them. It’s a real masterclass to watch. And… the perfect opportunity to understand how the emerging generations want to be served content and be taken through a new shaped marketing funnel that is much less in-out but much more of an infinite loop of loyalty and repeat custom. This is brilliant haha. Here’s why Aldi’s community management is top tier & what all marketers can learn from it: 1. Don’t try & be Aldi ↳ This casual, sassy tone works for Aldi, but it probably won’t work for you. Learn from what they are doing well & apply it with your brand’s tone of voice. 2. Speak like a human ↳ When replying to your audience from a brand account, don’t feel the urge to ‘speak like a brand’. People want to sense they are talking to a human. 3. Have fun with it ↳ Stop taking your community management so seriously. Have fun. People like fun! What do you think of Aldi’s sassy replies on social? Does it turn you on or off the brand?

Right 👏 up 👏 my 👏 street! Have you watched any of the Channel 4 ‘Inside Retail’ episodes? I’m obsessed 🤩 ✔️ Marketing & advertising ✔️ Product development & user testing ✔️ Trend analysis & growth strategies YES PLEASE 🙏 And hey, I’m all for fighting for the ‘little guy’ / the underdog, but there is just so much to learn from the market leaders. (Although, their giant marketing budgets do help..) This episode has some interesting case studies on diversification, the importance of product quality, how to stand out in saturated markets, and growth tactics including ‘when you can’t beat them - buy them!’ Martin Glenn, the President of Walkers Snackfoods (1998-2005) shared some advice - “In all commercial enterprises, there is a restlessness to get bigger and be the best. When you’re on top of the tree, look at the forest, don’t try to get an extra inch up the tree because you’re basically at the top. How can you spread out?” So, regardless if you’re team Cheetos or team Wotsits 🧀👇 There are many transferrable insights to take away💡 - highly recommend! Here is one example of integrated marketing that I love: Waitrose's "Wonky" Billboard 2024 This is my favourite integrated campaign because quick thinking from a social media interaction helped catapult a local ad into national media coverage. Saatchi & Saatchi created Waitrose's "Wonky Billboard" marketing stunt, which is an example of an inventive and comprehensive marketing strategy. This ad caught people's attention and generated national media attention by cleverly using a real billboard that was intentionally positioned at an angle to visually depict declining prices. Waitrose swiftly took advantage of the unexpected turn in the scenario when the local Wandsworth council in South London roped off the area, mistaking the slant of the billboard for a possible safety threat. The store responded to the council's move in a quick and witty way, telling the public on social media that although their prices were going down, their billboards were safe. Through social media interaction, this answer not only reinforced the message through amplified exposure but also perfectly matched the lighthearted tone of the original advertisement. This clever application of an integrated marketing strategy, which combined internet interactions with traditional outdoor billboard advertising, expanded the campaign's audience and efficacy. The end product was a great marketing ploy that showcased Waitrose's brand personality in addition to promoting the retailer's value promise. The campaign's success is evidence of how outdoor billboard advertising combined with digital media strategies can encourage media attention and public participation, transforming a local ad into national dialogue. This strategy not only kept customers interested, but it also strengthened Waitrose's reputation as a creative and approachable company. The campaign demonstrated the brand's adaptability in using unexpected events for good PR by utilizing humor and fast thinking to seize the opportunity. Why you should set yourself goals! This Saturday is the Swadlincote Small Business Showcase - an event I have been planning in partnership with South Derbyshire DC for the last few months. As with all marketing platforms, I've encouraged the exhibitors and stallholders to set themselves goals. By setting goals, you have something to work towards. it's easy to track if the event was a success or not by comparing your results against your goals and understanding if attending an event was worth the time investment. One thing I wanted to do differently when pitching this event back in early Spring was to be beside all those attending and give them the knowledge, confidence and support they needed to make a huge impact for their business. This I why I held a pre-event meet up to offer some ideas and suggestions for on the day, as well as enabling business owners to meet and network so they felt less nervous at the event. Saturday is the big day. Our exhbiting businesses have worked hard and I know they'll be confident in warmly welcoming the public to discover their exciting, interactive stands on the day and converting that interest into loyal customers.
