Overview

The Global Research team is responsible for delivering a strategically aligned portfolio of breakthrough innovations sourced by both internal inventions and external collaborations and partnerships. Researchers collaborate with customers, academic institutions, and industry partners to tap into expertise , share knowledge and develop solutions that meet evolving and difficult customer challenges.  Ultimately team members are charged with developing compelling proof of concepts in a lead application that explains transition of an innovation to development strongly influenced by voice of customer research.

The Global Research team is responsible for technological advancements in the field of sample preparation, separations, mass spectrometry and detection within Waters with a focus in market segments of chemistry and lab automation, testing and lab services, discovery and development, QA/QC, clinical and connected sciences.

A Research Software Engineer in the Global Research team is responsible for helping provide scientific and engineering contributions which impact projects significantly, with the goal of solving critical customer problems.  This includes providing strategic guidance to Waters stakeholders, as well as leading and/or mentoring a team(s) of scientists and engineers in the development of new science, technologies, methods, practices and ways of working. This role involves the generation and presentation of scientific content to support proposals for new product development.

Software Engineering Specific Roles & Responsibilities

  • Work in multi - disciplinary team to assist ongoing research projects involving real time control of sta t e - of - the - art instrumentation using C++ and scripting languages .
  • To design and develop prototype software solutions for Waters instrumentation.
  • To give software and technical support to users internal and external to the group, and company.


Accountability:

  • Accountable for own work, safety, and operation of instrumentation
  • Applies intermediate knowledge in specific scientific focus areas.
  • Works independently with mentorship from higher level scientists and engineers / manager / team leader or segment leader
  • Has developed limited market and competitive awareness.


Decision Making / Problem Solving:

  • Diagnoses issues, performs tests, and provides recommendations on a variety of problems which are of moderate scope.
  • Analyses and starts to interpret data and results.
  • Exercises moderate judgment, considering defined procedures and past practices when making decisions.
  • Continue to develop skills on current/relevant techniques.


Interpersonal Skills / Collaboration:

  • Works within team with frequent interaction with higher level scientist, engineer, manager or Segment Leader.
  • Focuses on building productive internal and external working relationships.
  • Has the ability to teach a limited number of technical concepts.
  • Can function as a scientific advisor to a collaborator.


Creativity & Innovation / Initiative:

  • Develop design of experiments independently and with assistance
  • Literature knowledge is current.


Productivity / Managing Results:

  • Receives direction on priorities from higher level scientist, engineer, Team Lead or Segment Lead. Handles own time.
  • On a team for a single project or combination of a major and a minor project.
  • Receives moderate technical direction.
  • Generates data and keeps coherent records.
  • Authors reports and peer reviewed papers, with assistance


Individual

  • Maintain the effectiveness of the Quality and Environmental system at the sites via adherence to applicable policies and procedures.
  • Complete Quality and Environmental System related actions in a timely manner according to procedures e.g. CAPA, NCR
  • Adhere to Environmental, Health and Safety policies and procedures.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a science, engineering or computing related subject and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experiences


Software Engineering Specific Experience:

  • Proven experience in modern C++ , object-oriented programming , scripting languages and ideally Rust
  • Experience in microcontroller, firmware or G PU (OpenCL/CUDA) development would be an advantage .


Aptitude / skills required:

  • Very good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with moderate guidance and connect with all levels of the group.
