AIPH joined conversations at COP16 in Cali, Colombia, with AIPH’s Technical Initiatives Manager, Dr Audrey Timm, connecting discussions on biodiversity, urban ecosystems, and the transformative potential of nature-positive economies. COP16, the 16th Conference of Parties to the UN Biodiversity Convention is recognised as the world’s most important event for conserving biodiversity. The summit, attended by over 15,000 delegates, focused on implementing the ‘30x30 Biodiversity Goal (KMGBF) to protect 30 per cent of the planet’s lands and waters by 2030. Dr Timm presented 'Learning from Cities: People and Nature in the Urban” at the Biopolis Symposium, organised by the International Living Infrastructure Commission (LINC). This keynote speech explored the three Finalists of the 'Living Green for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Restoration' category of the AIPH World Green City Awards 2024. Additionally, Dr Timm led the 'Transformations Leading to the Ideal Green City State' panel discussion, joined by Dr Bruno Marques of IFLA, Prof Harriet Bulkeley of Durham University, Dr Siobhan McQuaid of GoNaturePositive!, and Alan White of CNLA. Trees play a crucial role in urban environments, significantly contributing to climate change resilience. Trees help mitigate urban heat island effect, provide places for people to socialise and can transform urban areas. Selecting, caring and protecting trees in urban areas is vital for building sustainable, resilient cities that can adapt to the impacts of climate change. Join us next week for the AIPH Green City Briefing on 'growing trees for climate resilient cities' with MC Stefania Romano of UNECE/FAO Forests. The mosaic green spaces of the city contribute to maintaining biodiversity in urban environments. It's important to protect, connect and create space for nature 🌻
Biodiversity is the foundation of life – from microbes to plants, animals and humans. If lost, it impacts human societies & economies. At #COP16Colombia, efforts to reverse nature loss can pave the way for humanity to thrive. https://lnkd.in/gK38_vAG #GenerationRestoration
