About us

The vision of An Darach Forest Therapy is to inspire people to improve the health and wellbeing of themselves, of others and of the planet, using nature and nature-connection activities to achieve this. During the Covid Lockdown I trained as a ‘Forest Bathing Guide’ to develop effective ways to inspire and help people to use their one hour outside a day to improve and support their mental and emotional health and wellbeing. Since then I have trained as a Forest Therapy Practitioner. ‘Forest Bathing’ or ‘Forest Therapy’ is an increasingly popular nature-connection practice that has its roots in Japan in the 1980s, where it is referred to as ‘Shinrin-yoku’. It is the practice of walking slowly and leisurely through the woods or forest, inhaling the forest air, immersing yourself in the natural environment and mindfully using all your senses, opening them to the forest atmosphere and fostering an emotional connection to the landscape and environment. Forest Therapy has been developed into an evidence-based approach to improving health and wellbeing through the curative effects of forests and other ‘green spaces’, that is define as ‘a health promoting, salutogenic, nature connection practice that aims to enhance wellbeing, relieve stress, and encourage relaxation’. Salutogenic approaches to health focus on factors that support good health and wellbeing, and are therefore seen as primarily preventative forms of healthcare.   • Two really exciting pieces of news! An Darach Forest Therapy have been shortlisted for an RSPB Nature of Scotland Award, in the 'Health & Wellbeing' category, for the pilot project in HMP Inverness bringing nature connection activities and nature mindfulness practices onto their Recovery Wing. Secondly, in just over a week I start work for Phoenix Futures as their 'Recovery Through Nature Lead' in their new rehab in rural Aberdeenshire. I am very excited. It might well be my dream job! The Power of the Natural Environment:  How Connection to Nature Boosts Creativity Connection to nature has been shown to significantly enhance creativity by reducing stress, boosting cognitive functioning, and stimulating imaginative thought. Studies demonstrate that time spent in natural environments increases creativity and problem-solving abilities, while urban settings more often lead to mental fatigue. Nature's ability to engage our brains in a relaxed, undirected way, as described in Kaplan and Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory, allows the mind to recover from constant stimuli and regain focus, ultimately boosting creativity. The novel patterns, textures, and shapes found in nature can act as powerful stimuli for divergent thinking, encouraging the brain to make unexpected connections and generate new ideas. Additionally, time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, both of which are known inhibitors of creativity. By providing a sense of calm and relaxation, nature frees the mind from everyday pressures, allowing more abstract and imaginative thoughts to surface. Natural environments can also enhance brain function by activating the default mode network, which is crucial for daydreaming, reflection, and creative thinking. This state, often achieved during activities like walking in nature or observing natural surroundings, promotes mental rest and creative flow. Achieving flow, a state of deep focus and immersion, is closely linked to peak creative performance, and nature can help facilitate this experience. Practical ways to harness the creative power of nature include regular walks, working outdoors, mindful observation, and unplugging from technology. These simple actions help you to disconnect from the fast pace of modern life and reconnect with the natural world, fostering greater creativity. You can even benefit by bringing elements of nature indoors through plants, natural light, and art into your home or workspace. Ultimately, nature offers a profound yet often overlooked source of inspiration and mental clarity.   • Sit Spot and Learning to be Alone With Yourself Many people struggle with the concept of sitting quietly and being alone with their thoughts, especially in a society that values constant busyness and productivity. Modern technology offers endless distractions, which provide quick dopamine hits but can create anxiety when people find themselves without external stimuli. This constant barrage of digital engagement has made genuine solitude rare, and when faced with it, many experience discomfort or even anxiety as unresolved emotions and insecurities emerge. The Challenge of Solitude Sitting still and being alone with one's thoughts can be intimidating due to the conditioning of modern life, which promotes seeking constant entertainment. Some people find facing their thoughts without distraction can be overwhelming. For many, the fear of solitude and self-reflection stems from an unease with their inner thoughts and emotions. In these quiet moments, unresolved fears or insecurities surface, making solitude uncomfortable. As a result, many avoid stillness and instead immerse themselves in distractions, thereby evading self-reflection and personal growth. Rumination and Anxiety A major reason people may avoid solitude is due to rumination —repetitive and intrusive thoughts that amplify their anxieties. Left alone with their thoughts, unresolved issues can dominate, causing heightened anxiety and making it difficult to break free from negative thought patterns. Distraction from these thoughts, as through constant engagement with social media or streamed entertainment, can offer temporary relief, but the root problems often persist or worsen. Addressing these thoughts head-on is vital to breaking the cycle of rumination and anxiety, freeing up mental energy to focus on positive progress toward personal goals. The Importance of Self-Awareness Learning to be alone and sit in stillness can therefore be an important step toward developing increased self-awareness. Practices such as Sit Spot allow people to observe their thoughts and emotions without judgment, leading to deeper self-understanding and personal growth. By identifying negative thought patterns, you can make conscious decisions for positive change. This self-awareness, a key element of emotional intelligence, fosters better decision-making and healthier relationships. By being comfortable with just ‘sitting with themselves’, people are less likely to seek others’ company out of discomfort, appreciating other people for who they are rather than as distractions. For me, the practice of ‘Sit Spot’ offers time for reflection and relaxation, but I do sometimes find the time to engage in this practice can be a challenge due to high anxiety and a tendency to overburden myself with tasks and extensive ‘To Do’ lists. Key Features of Forest Bathing Invitations: Non-Directive Unlike instructions, invitations are open-ended suggestions that you can choose to follow in your own way, building a more personal and intimate connection with nature. Mindfulness Invitations encourage you to be fully present in the moment, focusing on your surroundings and bringing your mind back to the nature around you when your mind begins to wander.   • This week’s article explores some of the ways in which connecting with nature can enhance mental and emotional health, reduce stress, and promote overall wellbeing and emotional resilience. Increasing Nature Connection to Improve Mental Health Research indicates that connecting with nature can significantly enhance mental and emotional health, reduce stress, and promote overall wellbeing. Studies show that people who are more connected to nature report higher levels of autonomy, purpose, self-acceptance, and positive relationships. Conversely, disconnection from nature and modern lifestyles contribute to rising anxiety levels. Professor Eleonora Gullone's work suggests that humans are not adapting well to urban environments, leading to chronic stress and associated physical and mental health issues. Historically, humans have spent most of their time in natural settings, and our physiological functions are designed for such environments. However, rapid urbanisation since the Industrial Revolution has left many people in a constant state of stress. The autonomic nervous system, particularly the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the 'fight or flight' response, is often overstimulated by modern stressors like artificial lighting, traffic, and technology. However, nature can help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting the 'rest and digest' response and reducing stress. Spending time in nature lowers cortisol levels, and boosts serotonin production and endorphin release, which both improve mood and reduce anxiety and depression. Nature also encourages mindfulness, helping people shift focus away from negative thoughts, promoting cognitive functioning, and enhancing emotional resilience. Nature connection activities typically involve three key elements: noticing, feeling, and reflecting. Noticing nature involves being fully present and aware of the surroundings through all senses. Feeling connected means appreciating the beauty of nature and feeling part of it, rather than separate from it. Reflecting on these experiences, through activities like nature journaling, helps you to deepen this connection and to recognise patterns in nature. Nature journaling, in particular, reduces stress and enhances observational skills and memory. It encourages you to sit quietly and observe, promoting a sense of calm and improving mental health. Gratitude for nature also fosters a positive mindset, reducing stress and enhancing emotional resilience by helping you to feel interconnected with the world around you. Overall, reconnecting with nature offers a holistic approach to improving mental health through physiological, psychological, and social benefits. Engaging with natural environments can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, promoting a more balanced and resilient emotional state.
