Stronger, smarter grids are the backbone of the energy transition ⚡ Yet, upgrading them comes with its own set of challenges. Yesterday, at this year's first BloombergNEF briefing in Brussels, we delved into what it will take to finance and build the grids of the future. Our senior associates, Felicia A. and Eva Marina González Isla, shared insights into European grid investment trends, supply chain challenges, and the investment required for a net-zero power system. We then had a thought-provoking discussion with Oliver Franz (E.ON) and Vera Brenzel (TenneT) on how regulatory frameworks, permitting, and supply chains need to evolve to accelerate grid expansion. A huge thank you to our speakers and guests for contributing to the conversation. 👏 Learn more about BloombergNEF: https://lnkd.in/eQ42PsUr 📷 Sarah Bastin #EnergyTransition #PowerGrids #NetZero

This week, our BloombergNEF speakers shared key insights on how 2024 shaped Australia’s power, trade, and industrial sectors—and what to watch in 2025. 💡 Key takeaways: • Policy & politics: Global energy transition investment hit US$2 trillion in 2024 (+11% YoY), despite shifting attitudes towards de-carbonization. • Power markets: Wind & solar now make up 40% of Australia’s national electricity market, dominating midday demand and will continue to squeeze thermal plants. • Clean power: Investment in onshore wind and utility-scale solar has been volatile, but 2025 looks promising for new projects. • Trade & industrialization: Australia is pushing for economic diversification and embracing re-industrialization with initiatives like Future Made in Australia. 📖 Download the full report “Australia: 10 Things to Watch in 2025”at: https://lnkd.in/eiD_uk7Z

BloombergNEF had the pleasure to host it's first BNEF Forum Vancouver focused on Critical Minerals & Mining in Vancouver, Canada. The challenge of scaling the supply of critical minerals to power the new energy economy is huge and Canada has vast resources to support the transition and significant interest from First Nations in supporting and being a part of that economy. 🤝🌍 While many companies are scaling new technologies for critical minerals extraction and battery materials production, there are challenges to scaling rapidly, especially as China looms with its dominance in most of the production capacity today. Growing the Canadian supply chain was agreed to be imperative, despite the challenges ahead. ⚙️ 🚀
Last month, BloombergNEF held its inaugural Vancouver Forum to highlight the Future of Critical Minerals. I had an executive dialogue with Teck Resources Limited's CEO Jonathan Price to hear his views on demand, supply, sustainability, partnerships and his outlook for Teck. Big thanks to Government of British Columbia and Tersa Earth for their support. You can download the executive summary of our Transition Metals Outlook here: https://lnkd.in/deCC79nf
