Enjoyed attending "Navigating the AI Wave" at #BreakBulkAmericas, highlighting the difference between established solutions and emerging technologies, hosted by Dr. Meng Li, Bauer Human-Centered AI Institute, and speakers Marco Poisler, UTC Overseas, Inc., Gulshan Singh, PhD, Huntsman Corporation. One key takeaway from this that can apply to demand forecasting: GenAI, for example, can scan a supplier’s website for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reports, automatically filling in required questionnaires or flagging risks embedded in policies and reports. It can also gather information on various EU regulations from across the web and synthesize it into actionable protocols that guide procurement processes. AI can also be used for supplier selection and management. With the sheer amount of data involved—from cost structures, delivery times, product quality, to compliance with global trade regulations—AI can streamline the evaluation process. By analyzing these factors, it can assess vendor performance and suitability in real time, identifying patterns or risks that might be overlooked in manual evaluations. A recurring theme that I hear in discussions relating to successful AI implementation is that industry experts need to learn how to correctly use AI in order to make better-informed decisions. Day 2 of #Breakbulk Americas 2024 was packed with exciting insights, especially in the conversations around data centers and AI. Here’s what stood out to me: In the panel Big Tech, Chips & SMRs: A New Ecosystem of Project Opportunity, there was a strong focus on the growing demand for #semiconductors, which is becoming less cyclical and exponentially increasing due to the rise of AI. It was eye-opening to learn about the critical links between AI, semiconductors, and data centers—AI requires data centers, which rely heavily on semiconductors, and that means we need more fabricators to meet the growing demand. Another critical question raised was where will the extra power for AI come from? Energy demands are rising fast, and while #renewables like wind and solar fluctuate, there’s a significant opportunity for #nuclear energy from SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) to fill that gap. It’s clear that speed to market is vital for data center #hyperscalers, and there’s a huge volume of opportunity for #modular solutions to help meet these demands. Cyril Varghese, Fluor Corporation, John L., DHL Industrial Projects, Kristin Homsi (Baldwin), Bechtel Corporation, Rob Jacquet, United Heavy Lifts Americas Later in the AI Transformation: A Journey of Implementation session, there was a focus on the practical application of AI in supply chains. A key takeaway was how AI can sift through raw data, like pricing inconsistencies in invoices, and quickly find solutions. However, there’s a challenge: traditional supply chains rely on a lot of domain or "tribal" knowledge, which is tough to encode into AI systems. Upskilling and collaboration between AI and domain experts is critical to overcome these barriers. I also learned more about the Bauer Human-Centered AI Institute, which is driving innovation through research, teaching, and collaboration with industry. One company shared how AI allowed them to negotiate with 30,000 vendors at once, compared to only 10 through traditional methods. This is a game-changer in the supply chain industry.
