Hormonal changes to your body have a big impact on the day-to-day functioning of the brain, changing how we think, feel and behave. And the physical symptoms of menopause cause changes to the body that can be upsetting, negatively impacting how we feel about ourselves. You’ve probably heard more about the physical symptoms of menopause than the mental health symptoms. Everyone’s experiences are different, but symptoms can include: - Anxiety, depression and suicidal feelings. - Feelings of emptiness, anger or self-criticism. - ‘Brain fog’, including problems with memory, concentration or general thought processes. Menopause can be particularly challenging for people living with existing mental health problems. And reaching out for support is made even more difficult by the stigma and misconceptions about menopause. - Menopause is often trivialised or joked about. - General attitudes to menopause can enforce ageist and sexist stereotypes. - Doctors haven’t always had enough training in menopause, and research into it is limited.
