I just touched down in Melbourne, after I completed a half year placement at the Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation. Here I worked directly with Ryan Casement and Alessio Ciulli on taking my PhD project from a proof of concept, to a novel protein target. I indirectly worked alongside equally amazing people within the centre, though there are too many to name! I just wanted to formally say thank you to Alessio for welcoming me, to Ryan for being an amazing mentor, and everyone else at the centre for all their support, and the fond memories we share. I also wanted to extend my gratitude towards my supervisors, Martin Scanlon, Ben Capuano, Luke Adams and Bradley Doak for their exceptional ongoing support. Finally, a thank you to the ARC Centre for Fragment-Based Design and Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences for supporting me financially the whole way through my studies so far. A innovative molecular “cut and sew” process by University of Dundee scientists has allowed the design of a research tool that will accelerate drug design for diseases for which no other options exist, including cancer. Experts from the Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation have custom-built a new version of a protein that is commonly hijacked by molecules known as “protein degraders”. The process removes unwanted bits of the protein before the remaining parts are stitched together, allowing researchers to isolate the protein and work with it more efficiently in the laboratory. Alessio Ciulli, Director of the Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation, University of Dundee, has been in the headlines recently with the publication of the first in class pan-KRAS PROTAC degrader, ACBI3. Soon to be available on #opnMe, ACBI3 is the culmination of a long and successful collaboration between Alessio and Boehringer Ingelheim.
