🚨 New podcast alert 🚨 🎙 China is the world’s largest emitter and dominates the production of low-carbon technologies worldwide. It thus plays a key role in global efforts to address the climate crisis. How has China obtained its leading position in the production of green technologies? What role does China play in international climate negotiations? How important has the US-China relationship been in global efforts to reduce emissions, and what will happen now when Donald Trump is back in the White House? To discuss this and more, Ruth Townend and Anna Åberg are joined by Shuo Li (Director of China Climate Hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute) and Chris Aylett (Research Fellow at the Environment and Society Centre at Chatham House). Great first day at Chatham House Events Climate and Energy Summit 2025 #CHClimateEnergy. What stayed with me from the really interesting speakers and conversations happening here today? Starting with the keynote… 🌏 Ana Toni (CEO of COP30) stressing that #COP30 #Brazil will be the COP of implementation: 10 years on from the Paris Agreement, there is a lot to celebrate, but there is no question that we need to accelerate action to make the energy transition a reality. Collective action needs to start today. 🌏 Rachel Kyte (UK Special Representative on Climate)'s quote that climate is everything and everything is climate could have not been more spot on, highlighting that we need practical and cross-sectoral partnerships to make the energy transition happen and reach everyone in a fair and equitable way. … And a couple of relevant snippets of the 🔝 panels and conversations on #geopolitics, #adaptation and #resilience to cascading climate risks, #food-#water nexus, and #finance for the future: ⚡ The climate crisis should not be a competing priority to other crises/conflicts. Without climate action, crises will just increase. ⚖️ Climate action cannot be paused, it needs to be continuous. Especially climate justice needs to be taken as a priority by governments, private sector, civil society leaders, and everyone. 🫂 We're still working very much in silos, this must change. We need geospatial rather than sectoral analytics, and multi-stakeholder dialogue and collaborative solutions. 🌱 Nature-based solutions ones deserve more attention as we know that they are cost effective and deliver on both adaptation/resilience and emissions reductions. 🗞️ Also, language matters, and framing really matters. We need to be more strategic about communicating the evidence we have to reach beyond our bubble, meeting people where they are, avoiding further polarisation. 🕊️ Let's not despair about the difficult geopolitical context: it is in the times of crisis that collaboration tends to increase. And while traditional multilateral finance mechanisms may be shrinking, there are innovative financial solutions and mechanisms that are emerging and should be tapped into. Looking forward to Day 2 tomorrow!
