We're all in trouble with water. This report from the World Meteorological Organization should be a shocking wake-up call. I wonder how many people involved in #diplomacy and #security, #trade and #finance take note as it's going to have bigger and bigger impact on these areas globally, as effects cascade. Here at the Chatham House Environment and Society Centre, we will be widening our engagement on water's intersection with international relations in a changing climate.
WMO's new State of the Global #Water Resources report shows the urgency of integrated water and #ClimateAction. Water is the canary in the coalmine of #climatechange. We receive distress signals in the form of increasingly extreme rainfall, floods and droughts which wreak a heavy toll on lives, ecosystems and economies. Melting ice and glaciers threaten long-term water security for many millions of people. As a result of rising temperatures, the hydrological cycle has accelerated. It has also become more erratic and unpredictable, and we are facing growing problems of either too much or too little water. And yet, far too little is known about the true state of the world’s freshwater resources. We cannot manage what we do not measure. This report seeks to contribute to improved monitoring, data-sharing, cross-border collaboration and assessments. https://lnkd.in/dJj9339V

It was a pleasure speaking to Raluca Besliu for this recent article in The Parliament on #semiconductors. I highlighted the largely untapped potential in chip recovery and reuse, with new business models offering chip recovery services and refurbishing chips for reuse at a fraction of the cost of buying new ones. Aligning the EU Chips Act with the Circular Electronics Initiative could also help combine technological advancement with circular economy principles in the microchip industry. See the article here:

International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 🌎 🌱 Around one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted across the supply chain. Efforts to reduce food waste are crucial for improving food security, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and conserving biodiversity. At Chatham House, we focus on practical solutions at the intersection of food systems, climate change, and sustainability. Our research explores how improvements in food production 🍎, consumption 🥘, and conservation 🛤️ can create more resilient and sustainable food systems. We’re pleased to share that this week the Sustainability Accelerator launched a policy lab exploring regenerative design in the built environment, co-hosted with Constructivist The aim of the lab is to explore the question: How can we create policy that delivers regenerative design? To do this, we’ve brought together built environment and regenerative design practitioners with policy professionals, to experiment together on how to embed regenerative design across the built environment. What would a circular future 2050 look like? In our latest research paper we imagine what shape an inclusive global #circulareconomy might take in 2050, what its key elements might be, and how these elements would intersect with both the current SDGs and whatever comes after them. This indicative ‘future’ is presented as a blueprint for change, with proposed targets for increasing circular economy activity across all 17 of the current SDG categories. Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/er-nKd2D 📅 We’ll also be hosting a special event at the sidelines of the UN Summit of the Future on September 23rd, with virtual attendance available here: https://lnkd.in/dTsy8Svw. #SDGs #CircularEconomy #OurCommonFuture #SummitoftheFuture Thank you to all partners and supporters: African Circular Economy Network (ACEN) African Development Bank Group Circular Innovation Lab ApS Circle Economy Hanns Seidel Foundation Sitra UNIDO Wyss Academy for Nature WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform Circular Economy Coalition and many others!
