The Solicitors Regulation Authority analysis of the July 2024 SQE 1 results was published recently. The headlines are that 44% passed the 2 components that make up the exam, a significant decrease from the previous January sitting, where the pass rate was 56%. Once again, pass rates for men exceeded those for women, and pass rates for White candidates were above Asian, and concerningly, double those for Black candidates. Do you want to qualify as a social welfare solicitor? 📰 ⚡ 📢 The CLLS Training Committee, in association with BARBRI SQE Prep and Young Legal Aid Lawyers YLAL, is delighted to announce that applications for the fourth round of the Social Welfare Solicitors Qualification Fund (#SWSQF) are now open. SWSQF provides financial assistance for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam preparation courses and assessments (Parts 1 and 2). SWSQF is supported by the City of London Law Society (CLLS), The City of London Solicitors' Company, the Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) and the Law Centres Network. SWSQF has to date funded over 80 social welfare workers across England and Wales since its inception, with 13 now qualified. This year, with the support of our generous funders, we hope to fund around 30 new social welfare workers through their SQE preparation courses and assessments. If… 👩🏼🎓you are an aspiring solicitor working in social welfare law for organisations serving disadvantaged communities *and* 👨🏿🎓the clear majority of your work is within social welfare law *and* 👩🏾⚖️ you intend to stay within the field for at least two years after qualification *and* 👨🏽⚖️ you have the full support of your current employer …you can apply for the fund on the CLLS website – link below. CLLS Training Committee was delighted to be representing on Thursday evening at the The City of London Solicitors' Company inaugural #CelebrationOfImpact evening at the Armourers Hall where the good work of the company and those - including City of London Law Society (CLLS) - associated with it was called out. It was a super evening where we learned so much about great deeds being done by: 💥 City Solicitors Horizons to bring underrepresented community members into the London legal profession (shout out Ben Perry and Adam Badawy) 💥 Haringey Law Centre and the people it helps over a whole manor of legal issues (led by the wondrous Victoria Amadigwe) 💥 the reinvigorated The City of London Solicitors' Company Communications Committee, amplifying these and other good works (🙏, Joanna Hughes, Clare Murray, Alexandra Marks CBE, Ed Parker) 💥 the work done by the Livery Food Initiative to fund food redistribution in and around the capital 💥 Karen Anderson receiving the Distinguished Service Award 💥 Oliver Jones and Emily L. as recipients of the Company Essay Prize 💥 Liam S. who was the recipient of this year’s Wig & Pen award for pro bono work - achieving compensation for a decades-long victim of human slavery. Whilst this was all the most awe-inspiring, most excitingly, for this committee at least, was to hear Christina Digings talk about the super things #SWSQF - one of our committee’s babies - does: we have raised over £1.1m, that 106 social welfare lawyers will solicitor-qualify and that we *always* need more funders (Victoria Fearne very happy to talk to you). And to then experience one of our #SWSQFicitors, the heroic Thea Grattidge, share her journey, her passion, the work she does - particularly around homelessness - how she can now secure safe accommodation for the most vulnerable was the most humbling. 🚨NEW- “#SQE fails” guidance from The Law Society 🚨 The CLLS Training Committee has been actively collaborating with The Law Society, the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and the Legal Services Board for several years to ensure the successful implementation and operation of the SQE. Our goal has been to represent the perspectives of CLLS member law firms and their current and future solicitors throughout this process. 📉 Good luck to all candidates receiving their SQE1 results today. To date, pass rates for both SQE1 and SQE2 have been lower than expected, and lower than on the PGDL and LPC - this has presented new challenges for many employers. Dealing with future colleagues not passing the necessary regulatory exams has been an unusual occurrence for some firms requiring consideration of the complexities and consequences involved. Over the past couple of years, we have published guidance for employers on how to manage SQE fails. We are pleased that this guidance has been well-received and widely used. Recently, the Training Committee, led by A&O Shearman's Louisa Mendes da Costa, has been working closely with Nicole Poole at TLS to create updated guidance on how firms should manage SQE fails; this is now available on the TLS website here: https://lnkd.in/ehd7gPrj. 🔐Key Points of the New Guidance: 📍 Understanding the SQE Standard: The SQE assesses candidates at a day-one solicitor standard, which is a higher benchmark compared to the LPC. This makes the SQE more challenging and requires additional support and flexibility from employers. 📍 Managing Resits: Given the rigid SQE assessment timetable, employers need to consider policies that allow for resits. This includes deciding whether to defer the start date of qualifying work experience or allow resits during employment. 📍 Supporting Candidate Welfare: Employers should have resources in place to support candidates' mental health and well-being, especially if they need to resit exams or face deferrals. 📍 Policy Considerations: Employers should have clear policies on how to handle various scenarios, such as deferrals, resits, and potential cancellation of employment offers. These policies should be empathetic and respectful, taking into account factors like extenuating circumstances and reasonable adjustments. Guidance: 🔀 Be Flexible: Adapt policies to accommodate the unique challenges posed by the SQE. 🎙️ Communicate Clearly: Ensure both candidates and employers understand the actions to be taken under different circumstances. 🔍 Review Policies Regularly: Keep policies flexible and open to adjustments as more data on SQE pass rates and candidate experiences become available.
