A successful Data visualisation project stems from 3 keys steps: - Defining Purpose and Objectives 🎯 - Understanding Audience Profile 👥 - Data Collection, Preparation, and Visualization 📈 This blog, written by Sophia Adler delves into the creation of an interactive Streamlit dashboard to monitor and predict the behaviour of CfD (Contracts for Difference) generators. The CfD scheme encourages investment in low-carbon electricity generation by guaranteeing revenue through a fixed price mechanism. ☀️ Transforming complex data into clear, actionable insights enabled the ability to track the progress of these generators and predicting their behavior. Therefore, the resulting costs impacting suppliers, like EDF, can be more effectively measured. Read the full article here: https://ow.ly/r4oM50T197M

One in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia, which is why EDF have decided to partner with Alzheimer’s Society, and we are committed to do everything we can to support this important cause. On Saturday, 5th of October, some of our graduates will be taking on a skydiving challenge—falling from 10,000 feet at 120mph—to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. Sophie shared her thoughts on their fundraising efforts: "Alzheimer’s society is a charity close to my heart because my grandma has dementia. At the start, over 10 years ago, it was just signs of slight memory loss, but in recent years her mental and physical health have severely deteriorated. It's sad to see her so physically immobile, but most of all, how confused she can get. Despite rarely remembering our names, she always smiles when we say who we are." Alzheimer’s Society is a vital source of support, investing millions in cutting-edge research and providing care and assistance in so many different ways. Just £95 could fund a telephone dementia adviser for one day, offering information and reassurance to people with dementia and their loved ones. Unfortunately, there is still no cure for dementia, yet it affects so many of us, both young and old. Please share, donate, and show your support for our team who are raising money for such a great cause. Good luck to Arina Bulantseva and Sophie Huggon on your skydive! 🛫 Fundraising page: https://ow.ly/8ufB50STF8s

In test-driven software development, unit tests are created before the solution code is written to satisfy those tests. This recognised approach helps in writing robust code. 💻 In his blog, Kevin Baldwyn makes the case that robustness is just one aspect of quality, and that test-driven development can enhance overall code design. 💡 He demonstrates this by starting at the solution level using interfaces and then iterating to individual unit implementations, leading to code that is robust, easy to understand, and extensible. Thanks Kevin for your insights on TDD! Read the full article here: https://ow.ly/VUFY50SUveL #TDD #SoftwareDevelopment #UnitTesting #CleanCode #SoftwareDesign #Programming #Agile #DevOps

🌟 AI Team Training Day 🌟 Our AI Team recently had a fantastic in-person training day, focusing on Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and Unit Testing, as well as taking the opportunity to get together in person in sunny Hove! 📊 EDA: We had a deep dive into data visualization and pre-processing techniques, enhancing our ability to extract valuable insights from raw data, ultimately to better inform and shape the models we build. 🧪 Unit Testing: Our sessions on unit testing emphasized the importance of robust and reliable code, ensuring our pipelines and models are accurate and dependable, and consistently produce the results that we expect them to. 🤗 Team Building: Beyond the technical skills, it was a great opportunity to connect face-to-face, as well as connecting with members of other teams from across EDF who joined virtually, strengthening our collaboration and teamwork. Big thanks to Reyam Enad for organizing the day, and to everyone else for their engagement and enthusiasm! Looking forward to more of these opportunities to get together to connect and learn from one another.

A threat modelling workshop is a great way to upskill team members on Cybersecurity while also testing the resilience of internal applications. 🦾 We hosted such a workshop last Thursday and brought together members of our data and tech community as well as our security architects to probe elements of our energy trading platforms. The aim was to better understand which defences 🐱👤 our platforms already have in place and to determine if there are any potential gaps. The team emerged with a better understanding of threat modelling principles and cybersecurity aspects relating to applications, especially those hosted on AWS. 💡☁

At EDF, innovation is ingrained in our commitment to enhance customer service. Recently, we undertook a significant modernisation effort, transforming our decade-old Prepayment Meter Infrastructure Provision (PPMIP) system into a cloud-native, serverless, event-driven architecture on AWS. 💡🚀 This strategic shift not only enhances our operational efficiency but also reinforces our capability to scale and adapt swiftly to evolving demands. Utilising the Strangler Fig Pattern and harnessing AWS Database Migration Service, we ensured a seamless transition from legacy infrastructure to state-of-the-art cloud solutions. ☁ Our focus remains on delivering uninterrupted service and leveraging technological advancements to drive excellence in the energy sector. Jeremy Brooks, a Senior Software Engineer at EDF, was at the heart of this project and has written about his experience. For an in-depth look at our transformative journey, delve into the full story here: https://ow.ly/VzwF50SK1pz 🎯 #EDF #AWS #Innovation #StranglerFigPattern

Yesterday, some of our colleagues from the Wholesale Market Services (WMS) team at EDF spent the day at a workshop with our partners Mesh-AI ⚛️ The aim of the workshop was to devise a scope and roadmap for a new backtesting tool that will enable us to take a deeper dive into the precision and effectiveness of our non-energy cost forecasts. Non energy costs form a part of every customer’s bill, from individual households to large businesses, and include contributions towards things like transmission network upgrades and subsidies for green initiatives ♻️ WMS have been generating and iterating these forecasts for years, and so we have a great opportunity to use back testing to understand their accuracy and iterate our modelling processes. We’re really excited to be working with Mesh-AI to deliver this project 🤝

Two weeks ago, EDF's Commercial and Performance team swapped their office attire for sports gear and enjoyed an action-packed sports day! 🏅⚽️🏃♀️ It was a fantastic day filled with energy, laughter, and a bit of friendly competition. From football matches to relay races, each event showcased our incredible team spirit and commitment to supporting one another. Dan Yates, a Data Analyst within Commercial and Performance, had this to say about their experience: "My sports day with EDF was an absolute blast! It was a mix of friendly competition and lots of laughs. Everyone took the games surprisingly seriously, which was especially entertaining considering how silly most of the events were. Seeing my co-workers stumble through sack races, enthusiastically throw foam rockets, and battle it out in chaotic 5-a-side football was hilarious and heart-warming. The sunny weather, great food, and awesome company made it a perfect day!... Let's just skip over the table tennis part." A huge thank you to everyone who participated and to those who organised this wonderful event, here’s to many more such events that keep us active and bring us closer together. Proud to be part of EDF! 🙌 #EDF #SportsDay #Teamwork #TeamBuilding
