A wristband that uses speckle pattern analysis and a polymer optical fibre (POF) sensor to monitor pulse waves – vital indicators of physiological health, has been developed to aid diagnosis of various medical conditions. Compared to previous pulse signal monitoring wristbands, the new smart photonic wristband demonstrated improved sensitivity, accuracy and portability. The pulse wave information collected by the wristband also contained more detailed medical information. Advanced photonics research on enhancing protein analysis technologies has been awarded €2 million in funding from the H2POWRD Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network programme. "These technologies could lead to more precise diagnostics in healthcare," said Dr. Padraic Morrissey, Senior Technology Programme Manager at the Tyndall National Institute, such as in biotechnology where "real-time monitoring during bioprocessing could significantly improve efficiency and product quality and in personalised medicine, the ability to closely monitor individual protein behaviours could lead to tailored treatments, making therapies more effective and specific to patient needs."
