If you missed ELIRE Infra's VP of Energy, Maritime and Sustainability, Derek McGlashan present at RenewableUK Ports & Vessels conference, here’s some insights from his talk “Preparing Ports for Floating Offshore Wind.” Key identified challenges: 🫰 Bold Investments: UK ports need around £4B to upgrade their facilities for floating offshore wind. 🔋 Ramping Up Renewables: With over 20 gigawatts of floating wind power expected globally by 2035 there’s an urgent call to rethink port spaces. 🏗️ Modernizing Infrastructure: Eleven UK ports to become new-age industrial hubs, ready to host innovative projects and support rapid clean energy deployment. ⚡ Closing the Gap: 50% of vessels can already connect to clean power, only 2% of ports are equipped to offer connections. 🚀 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮’𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 🚢 💙 💚 At ELIRE Infra, we’re excited to share our contribution to a recent industry feasibility study, commissioned by Scottish Enterprise, exploring the transformative potential of temporary floating ports for the offshore wind (OSW) sector.  As Scotland focuses on 𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, the OSW industry faces a critical challenge; scaling port infrastructure that is cost-effective, adaptable, and environmentally sensitive. 👉 That’s where ELIRE’s 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝘂𝗯𝘀 come in. The study, led by ARUP, revealed the transformative potential of temporary floating ports as innovative solutions for scaling OSW deployment. ELIRE Infra contributed its revolutionary Smart Hubs concept—floating, modular platforms that are designed for rapid deployment, scalability, and environmental sensitivity. 💡𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 -   Traditional port infrastructure is costly, complex, and time-intensive to develop. Floating ports offer unique benefits, including: ✅ Faster Deployment: Operational within 12 months. ✅ Adaptability: Ideal for areas unsuitable for permanent infrastructure. ✅ Environmental Preservation: Minimal disturbance with restoration upon removal. ✅ Smart assembly methods using existing portside infrastructure (credit our partners Sealand Projects Ltd) ☑️ The study concluded that floating platforms like ELIRE Infra Smart Hubs are technically feasible and well-suited for supporting OSW projects in space-constrained or environmentally sensitive areas. Our VP of Ports, Energy & Sustainability, Derek McGlashan, explains: "Innovating, engineering and designing smarter floating options for ports is critical to support the environmental impacts of Offshore Wind developments in the future.
