In 2023, I had the honour to deliver the keynote speech when Essex Social Care Academy launched their Anti-racism strategy. Today, they honoured their strategy and we delivered our first anti-racism training to embed the strategy. As we all know, strategies and plans do not change behaviour, people change behaviours.
Witnessing senior leaders in the space lean into discomfort, introspect, take a 360 turn and acknowledge the work they have to do to ensure that services are equitable and just was so breathtaking. A collective approach to dismantling a systemic issue was agreed as one major action on their call to action. How powerful! As the African proverb says "if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far go together".
I am taking a deep breath and stepping into the weekend with so much admiration of all the senior leaders across Children and Families, Education and Adult Social Care for not shying away but stepping in to use their collective power to dismantle the system.
Massive thank you to Antonia Ogundayisi Phil Chiza @paulmcGee
Jan Williams Melanie Anderson for all the behind the scenes planning and driving the agenda.
Thanks to @johnburnham & Dr Jo Flack for our own journey preparing for today and the days to follow.
