AI Growth Spurs Demand for Energy-Efficient Data Solutions: Photonics Leads the Way at #ECOC 2024 As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to expand, so does the need for faster, more efficient data processing. At the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2024, the photonics industry highlighted the game-changing potential of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). These advanced chips promise to tackle AI's skyrocketing data and energy demands by significantly boosting speed while reducing power consumption. Several companies showcased their innovations at ECOC 2024. Jabil is expanding its silicon photonics capabilities to enable next-gen data centres, while start-ups like Lightium are pushing boundaries with thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) PICs, which can dramatically improve data transmission rates and cut energy use. HyperLight's $37M Series B funding will accelerate its TFLN technology, designed specifically for AI-driven data centres. Meanwhile, Swiss start-up Lightium raised $7M to commercialise TFLN chips, addressing the growing data bottleneck. Ephos, introducing glass-based quantum photonics, is aiming to reduce energy consumption in AI and quantum computing by tackling signal loss issues, backed by $8.5M in seed funding.
