Grid for Good is an energy industry programme delivering a positive impact to disadvantaged young people.

About us

Grid for Good is a flagship energy industry programme led by National Grid to deliver a positive impact to socio-economically disadvantaged young people. The scheme sees us working with our supply chain partners to provide training and employment opportunities for young people and with charities to access a diverse range of talented young people with the power to help us reach our net zero goals. Grid for Good is all about helping young people, aged 16-25, who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our charity partners will seek out the young people who can benefit from the scheme, but we’re targeting the following groups of young people with the scheme: Ex-offenders Those with low educational attainment The recently unemployed Those from ethnically diverse backgrounds and facing extra socio-economic disadvantage or are ex-offenders. To date we’ve already helped over 1000 young people and have 600 National Grid employees registered as volunteers. Our goals are to deliver: 12,000 volunteering hours, positively impacting 4,000 young people, in our first year. 125,000 volunteering hours, positively impacting 22,500 young people, by 2030.

A team of dedicated individuals from our Electricity Transmission Customer Connections South team recently experienced a day volunteering at Lindengate Charity in Wendover, Buckinghamshire (arranged by our community volunteering partner Volunteering Works). The purpose of this day was to support this wonderful charity with their inspiring 6-acre wild garden project which aims to assist individuals with mental health issues and disabilities by engaging them in gardening, woodwork, wildlife preservation, and sustainable practices which they describe as “social and therapeutic horticulture”. Tasks included clearing a section of the garden of waste and organising spare materials, moving large quantities of new materials such as fence posts and sleepers to further enhance the garden's infrastructure and prepare for new projects by the regular volunteer teams. During the afternoon the team planted various species of plants in the wildflower beds and concluded day participating in FIT studies. These studies involved cordoning off specific areas and counting the number of pollinators visiting flowers within a ten-minute window. The data collected during these studies will be uploaded to a project that monitors the conditions and quality of environments throughout the country, providing valuable insights into the state of nature. This volunteering day at Lindengate was not only a chance to give back to the community but also a reminder of the positive impact we can make when we come together as a team. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lindengate, our host Jenny Esdon, and all the participants for making this day a memorable and rewarding experience. Let's continue to support and engage in such initiatives, as they not only benefit those in need but also enrich our own lives. Lindengate Charity Volunteering Works Grace Asiimwe
