Mergermarket’s M&A Highlights 9M24 report reveals an uptick in global M&A activity with mega deals at the forefront of the recovery. M&A volume for the period increased 18.8% Year-on-Year to USD 2.5 trillion, with mega deals valued at USD 2 billion or more accounting for USD 1.278 trillion. Each quarter outperformed its corresponding quarter in 2023, and despite the usual caution around the US elections, North America saw substantial blockbuster deals. Mergermarket and Debtwire, services of ION Analytics, report a remarkable resurgence in private equity (PE) buyouts in 1H24, with direct lending playing a pivotal role. The 1H24 US Buyout Highlights report shows that buyouts skyrocketed to USD 146 billion in the US, led by Truist Life Insurance Services’s USD 12.3 billion acquisition by Stone Point Capital, Clayton Dubilier & Rice, and Mubadala Investment. Direct lenders doubled their activity, funding USD 20.6 billion in buyout financing. According to the Europe Buyouts Highlights report, buyouts soared to EUR 95 billion, with Apollo Global Management, Inc.'s UR 10.1 billion acquisition of a 49% stake in the joint venture entity related to Fab 34 leading the charge. Mergermarket, an ION Analytics service, has published its 1H24 M&A Highlights report which reveals a resurgence in large-cap strategic M&A, marked by a notable comeback in listed dealmaking in the US and UK. Key findings include: - Global M&A volume grew 17% to USD 1.6 trillion in 1H24, with corporate buyers accounting for 73% of deal volume, a level not seen since before the pandemic. - In 2Q24, PE activity surged with buyouts up 81.3%, driven by larger PE buyouts and more public-to-private transactions emerging in early stages. - Sector-driven M&A saw significant activity in the US oil and gas sector with major deals like Marathon Oil. - Financial sponsor activity surged 36% to USD 281 billion, driven by tech sector buyouts. With upcoming elections worldwide, sectors with strong global tailwinds are expected to sustain dealmaking activity throughout the rest of the year.
