We are excited to announce that, in October, we are collaborating with ISIS Neutron and Muon Source to host the 16th International Workshop on Spallation Materials Technology. 💫 This workshop is the premier international forum to discuss the latest research and development of materials used in spallation sources and accelerator-driven systems for high-power operation. Workshop events will be held at The Cosener's House in Abingdon and run from the 28th of October to the 1st of November 2024. In addition to the workshop's five days of talks and networking, admission will include an ISIS facility tour and an evening in Oxford. Interested in attending IWSMT16? A recent publication, with lead author Zhanar Zhakiyeva, PhD, focuses on an experiment looking at the hydrated phases inside cement that are key to its strength. Zhanar wrote a science highlight for our website, saying: “Neutrons are ideal for studying water dynamics because of the large scattering cross section of hydrogen." A new sample cell for controlling relative humidity has been designed and 3D printed by the sample environment team, and has now been successfully commissioned on LOQ. This was a real team effort, and the cell will also be useful for experiments on beamlines across ISIS, not just LOQ, mainly for SANS and Reflectometry experiments. A few of the people involved (who are on LinkedIn) are: Leide Cavalcanti, Xiao Wang, James Dalton, Keith Allum. #TeamworkMakesTheBeamWork

Researchers from Valeska Ting's Research Group, based at the University of Bristol and The Australian National University have observed the impact of different cations and frameworks on the trapdoor behaviour of zeolites for gas separation. Because these zeolites have the potential for use in the nuclear industry, the group worked with Paul Henry at ISIS to perform radiation testing and to estimate the stability of the zeolites under extreme conditions. Our current beam cycle came to an end last week, so we’re celebrating the range of work we’ve done over the last few months. From clean energy and battery improvements to drug delivery, and even seeing inside tyrannosaurus rib bones, our researchers, support staff, and global community of users have been busy pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge. One thing that makes ISIS Neutron and Muon Source such a great place to work is our fantastic colleague culture. Last month, two teams from ISIS competed in the annual Harwell Cup Challenge. 🏆 The Harwell Cup is a celebration of the diverse people that work across Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, giving them an opportunity to put their teamwork skills to the test in a new environment and appreciate the community on campus. Both days were a lot of fun and were a great team-building opportunity for everyone involved. Congratulations to Team Milford for their 6th place result, and to the Target Titans for claiming 3rd place! 🏅

Researchers from the University of Bath have used the OSIRIS beamline to probe the behaviour of biomass derivatives within commercial porous zeolite catalysts. “OSIRIS can uniquely probe the behaviour of lignin derivatives within porous zeolite catalysts," explains lead author and ISIS facility development student, Katie Morton. “By combining these results with molecular dynamics simulations, we can unravel the diffusive and adsorptive mechanisms to later optimise catalysts for the sustainable production of fuels and other important chemicals."
