‘When we talk about DE&I, it’s often a very polite, corporate way of saying “Don’t be racist.”’ Really enjoyed speaking to young Black lawyers for this piece on diversity in the legal profession. Check it out on Legal Business Magazine - and thanks as always to everyone who took the time to talk to me! https://lnkd.in/ejFwm79i

Pro bono is a key element of the ESG landscape in the legal profession, with an array of worthy initiatives supporting causes which require expert legal support. At the Legal 500 UK ESG Awards 2025, we will be recognising such initiatives – both on a national and international level. Continuing the legacy of former Pinsent Masons communications head Fred Banning, who founded Fifth Day before losing his life to cancer, we were proud to award Fifth Day Pro Bono Initiative of the Year for the UK ESG Awards 2025. Fifth Day’s initiative to promote pro bono work beyond qualified lawyers to professional services staff employed in the legal sector more broadly, stood out for its commitment to connecting skilled staff in a variety of areas with opportunities to do good for communities, and to develop their own skills and experience non-profit work. To be considered for the Pro Bono Initiative of the Year award, please send your applications by Friday 15 November 2024 and nominations via our platform at https://lnkd.in/eYahXMzD #Legal500 #L500Awards #ESG #UK #Legal #ProBono

Big story from Elisha Juttla - more than 20 of Latham & Watkins’ equity partners have made it into the elite firm’s new ‘super points’ band, which is intended to better reward star performers by allowing them to earn nearly double the profit share of those at the top of the firm’s core lockstep. Legal Business has learned that 22 Latham partners now sit within the so-called ‘super points’ tier. The move comes amid intense competition to attract and retain talent at the very top of the US market, where firms like Kirkland and Paul Weiss have been linked with packages above $20m for a handful of partners. Mark Sansom might be the most interesting partner at Freshfields since 1743.
"In top-level motorsport, 15 minutes after every session completes, all the drivers and engineers are back in the race truck with the data. The discussion isn’t personalised, there’s no blame - it’s all about what happened and what could be done better next time." In this Life During Law interview with Georgina Stanley, Freshfields London managing partner Mark Sansom discusses his passion for motorsports and what he takes from it into his work life, nearly drowning in a Welsh river, turning down Oxford 'in a fit of 17-year-old pique', and the importance of owning up to your mistakes. https://lnkd.in/eivgcYpn

• 'Like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but more courteous.' • 'A rare and lethal combination of Marcus Aurelius and Sun Tzu.' Just a few examples of the type of testimonials you can expect in the new Legal 500 UK rankings, which are released this Wednesday. We’ve reached new levels of referee engagement this year, with over 65,000 responses, up more than 15% on last year. While you will see much of the client feedback published alongside the new rankings next week, there’s a vast amount of additional testimonials that we do not publish – if you are interested in getting full access to all unfiltered feedback (good and bad!) we have a range of research products on offer – please do contact the team via researchreports@legal500.com to find out more. Ahead of launch, we’ve crunched the numbers to see which firms have come out top for total responses, cut by region and practice area. Check out a taster of the findings below. The wait is almost over – the new Legal 500 UK rankings will be published on Wednesday next week, with lawyers up and down the country set to find out whether they got that top-tier promotion or LinkedIn-worthy testimonial from a happy client. Here at Legal 500, we appreciate that rankings release day can be a work-intensive time for even the most organised of BD professionals, and so we are once again offering firms a sneak peek at their new rankings ahead of publication. Our early access data dashboard allows you to download all the details of how you’ve done, with individual rankings and full editorial commentaries as well as practice rankings. Hundred of firms are perusing this data already and lining up their comms strategies ahead of the big day, so if you are interested in getting early access, please do drop us a line; you can contact your account manager direct, or UK regional manager James Crombie (james.crombie@legal500.com). Best of luck to everyone – we’re looking forward to seeing all of your celebratory posts! #Legal500 #L500UK2025 #Legal #Rankings
