Opportunity North East Limited and University of Aberdeen brought Cancer Research Horizons to ONE BioHub yesterday to deliver their ‘Innovation Engine’ event which was supported by ONE Life Sciences. Cancer research horizons provides seed funding and entrepreneurial programmes that support researchers in therapeutics, diagnostics, MedTech, data, and AI. Cigdem Selli (Chee-them Sally), PhD, James Ritchie, and Juliana Callaghan from Cancer Research Horizons inspired entrepreneurs and founders by discussing finding new cures for cancers, creating companies, funding novel research from early stage to scale up, and support programmes and events. Attendees were also introduced to CancerTools.org, a biorepository that provides essential research tools like cell lines, antibodies, and plasmids to accelerate discoveries. It was great to engage with an audience of oncology companies, academic scientists, spinouts, and NHS doctors and surgeons, all committed to advancing cancer research and innovation. 👏 Congratulations to Soumya Palliyil and Carol Munro co-founders at Brigid Bio who won a share of the Regional EDGE North East prize fund of £100,000, securing £10,000 for their biotech treatment of high-risk fungal infections. 🤝 The awards, aimed at innovative businesses, are the latest initiative in the long-standing relationship between The Scottish Government and Scottish EDGE and delivered in partnership with Opportunity North East Limited. Funds were allocated through a competitive process, which involved 12 finalists pitching to a panel of judges, Deirdre Michie OBE, Dr Alexis Roberts-McIntosh, Rob Burnett and Grant Smith. 📍 The pitches and awards ceremony took place at ONE Tech Hub in Aberdeen. 💬 Jennifer Craw MBE, CEO of Opportunity North East, said: “ONE and Scottish EDGE both inspire and support entrepreneurship and innovation, with ONE building the entrepreneurial ecosystems in the region’s growth sectors.
