What a fantastic celebration of all things oracy at Voice 21 UK's Great Oracy Exhibition in Birmingham yesterday! We hosted a 'Let's Talk Maths' workshop with Louise Pennington FCCT and Kathleen McBride exploring: how talk in maths can really deepen understanding; how manipulatives can be used as a tool for talk; how and when to teach precise vocabulary; and how oracy can help combat maths anxiety and build confidence. We've worked closely with the team at Voice 21 to develop our Talk for Maths Benchmarks, putting oracy at the heart of the maths classroom, so it was fantastic to receive so much positive feedback yesterday from schools using the benchmarks to implement impactful oracy practice in maths. Voice 21 CEO Dr Kate Paradine welcomed over 500 delegates: “It’s been an amazing year for oracy. We want oracy to continue to be part of the government's education reforms, and we know all of you here are such an important part of that.” Voice 21's Amy Gaunt delivered a great session for oracy leaders and Amanda Moorghen showed how to build your own oracy assessment. We were so impressed with students from Voice 21 Oracy Schools who displayed their brilliant oracy skills on the Voicebox Stage, talking so eloquently about subjects they're passionate about! We enjoyed hearing from Geoff Barton, Chair of the Oracy Education Commission, and Commissioners Professor Stephen Coleman and Sonia Thompson in a powerful panel discussion, 'Towards an oracy entitlement for every child: findings from the Oracy Education Commission'. As headline sponsors of the event, we were delighted to present the Douglas Barnes Award, celebrating research conducted by teachers at Voice 21 Oracy Schools. Andrea Quincey, Director of Early Years and Primary at Oxford University Press, presented the commended project to Christina Loane and the award for the winning project went to Dr Thomas Cousins. Congratulations to the winners! The OUP stand was busy with delegates picking up their free copy of the Talk for Maths Benchmarks, entering our prize draw to be in with the chance of winning a Maths Bundle, and exploring support including new Numicon Essentials and our exciting Stories for Maths series, coming soon. If you weren't lucky enough to attend, you can download our Talk for Maths Benchmarks via the link in the comments.
