Finding effective relief can be a real challenge for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD/GERD). But what if the solution lay in something as simple as the food we eat? A study published in Nutrients journal, has taken a close look at the potential of ‘functional foods’ to tackle GERD symptoms head-on. https://lnkd.in/dD_3wcNC

Measuring salivary pepsin levels has the potential to reduce time to diagnose acid reflux, minimise the use of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, and streamline care for patients with symptoms. That’s the findings of a study undertaken at two care centres at the University of Colorado and the University of California San Diego. Peptest is a simple, non-invasive test that detects the presence of pepsin, an enzyme associated with acid reflux, in your saliva. Learn more here 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/d5ZFnZr

A cough associated with reflux is a chronic cough which you are likely to have had for several months even years. Research has shown that reflux cough usually diminishes at night as the valve at the bottom of the oesophagus closes during sleep, but the cough often stops you getting to sleep at night. The cough then reoccurs in the morning, frequently as you get up (the valve opens to allow for belching). The cough is also precipitated by meals, particularly on swallowing dry food or shortly after the meal has finished. Reflux/chronic cough is also very apparent following aspiration, exercise and walking.

Reflux tends to be progressive in that the more a person refluxes the more damage will be caused to the oesophagus and airways which in turn will cause further reflux. Continuous, untreated reflux disease can lead to a very poor quality of life and may also lead to serious problems, such as oesophageal cancer and cancer of the larynx. A fast and accurate diagnosis of reflux can result in getting the right treatment at the right time, averting further long-term health problems. Once we receive your saliva samples, it takes around 20 mins for our technicians to analyse these in the lab. We share results on the same day as testing your sample – typically this is within 48 hours of a sample arriving at the lab.

Continuous, untreated gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease can lead to a very poor quality of life and may also lead to serious problems, such as damage to the oesophagus, oesophageal cancer and cancer of the larynx. Receiving reflux treatment without confirming that symptoms are caused by reflux can be dangerous. Taking medication when it is unnecessary can lead to long-term health problems and may conceal a serious underlying issue. Many people take anti-reflux medication for months or years without understanding the serious risks. Peptest offers an easy path to diagnosis. It is an accurate, painless and inexpensive test that tells you conclusively if you have reflux by measuring the presence and concentration of a stomach enzyme called pepsin in a sample of your saliva. https://lnkd.in/d4TMHMS

Many people who suffer from gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or general reflux symptoms know that food choices and eating habits can greatly impact how they feel. While avoiding certain trigger foods is commonly advised, there’s another approach rooted in the traditions of Okinawa, Japan, that could offer relief: Hara hachi bu. This centuries-old practice of eating only until you’re 80 per cent full could play an important role in managing reflux symptoms. Find out more here 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/ePqab3VU

A recent study published in Scientific Reports has identified a connection between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Sjogren’s syndrome (SS), shedding light on how these two conditions might influence each other. Sjogren’s syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to dry mouth and dry eyes, but it can also impact other parts of the body, including the digestive system. https://lnkd.in/epDu9rNy
