ASTeC is a Centre of Excellence for study of the production, acceleration and delivery of charged particle beams.

About us

The Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) was created in 2001 as a Centre of Excellence for study of the production, acceleration and delivery of charged particle beams. Charged particle accelerators are at the heart of numerous frontier projects in science and technology, including large scale international research facilities for particle and nuclear physics and major UK centres such as synchrotron sources for neutrons and photons. Alternative but much smaller solutions apply to medical and industrial applications. Technologies associated with all modern applications of charged particle beams continue to evolve and demand associated R&D programmes to be pursued. Staff from ASTeC have expertise in all aspects from design through construction to commissioning. In addition to specifically selected accelerator projects we are engaged in an ongoing programme of world class research and development studies. ASTeC is a partner in the Cockcroft Institute, together with the universities of Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester and Strathclyde. We also have strong collaborative links with the John Adams Institute, many other universities and with overseas institutions.

Members of the Cockcroft Institute kicked off #BritishScienceWeek at the Family Day at Victoria Gallery & Museum in Liverpool last weekend. Taking place annually in March, British Science Week is a national 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, marked by schools, libraries, museums, businesses and more.

Always looking for ways to build sustainable accelerators

🧲 STFC ASTeC and STFC Technology Department have been developing a Zero Power Tuneable Optics (ZEPTO) magnet to drive sustainability in particle accelerator science alongside our friends at CERN. 🧊 Traditional electromagnetic quadrupoles require high electricity consumption and cooling mechanisms, but ZEPTO magnets contain large blocks of permanent magnet material which provide the strong fields needed to focus accelerator beams precisely without producing any carbon dioxide in the process. 🚗 The team faced and overcame challenges throughout the build, including the application of advanced motion control technology to move the magnet blocks (equivalent to moving an entire car within a hair width accuracy). 🌱 Having overcome these challenges, a ZEPTO magnet is soon to be incorporated into the Compact Linear Accelerator for Research and Applications (CLARA) at STFC Daresbury Laboratory, with hopes that this will change the landscape of future particle accelerator planning that puts environmental sustainability at the heart. Science Minister Lord Vallance has announced Professor Sir Ian Chapman as our new Chief Executive Officer. He will succeed Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser who decided last year not to seek a second term when her 5-year secondment comes to an end in June. Prof Ian Chapman is the Chief Executive Officer of the UK Atomic Energy Authority. He is currently a member of the UKRI Board, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society. He will take up his role at UKRI in the summer. Lord Vallance said: “Growing the economy is this government’s number one mission and taking full advantage of the innovative ideas, talent and facilities across our country is key to reaching that goal and improving lives across the UK. “Sir Ian’s leadership experience, scientific expertise and academic achievements make him an exceptionally strong candidate to lead UKRI in pursuing ambitious, curiosity-driven research, as well as innovations that will unlock new benefits for the UK’s people and drive our Plan for Change. “We also thank Dame Ottoline Leyser ahead of her stepping down this summer, recognising her pivotal work in guiding UKRI through challenging times, notably during the Covid pandemic and through the UK’s return to participation in Horizon Europe.” Full story: https://lnkd.in/dBxGrX7B
