At the end of March, Cosmonauts partnered with the European Space Agency - ESA & The Sustainable Markets Initiative to deliver our most ambitious & impactful SPACEtalks to date. Led by Laura Landa Ortega, our team brought together 300 of the industry's brightest minds, visionaries, government experts, and investors to deliver compelling presentations and engage in transformative discussions on space technology, commercialisation, and the industry's future. I had the unique opportunity to host the former Minister for Space George Freeman MP, with whom we discussed how the UK has a rare window of opportunity to push ahead by thinking like a start-up, but only if government and policymakers do better in supporting innovation by being more open, entrepreneurial, and generous to all who strive to build a better tomorrow. Aside from my participation, my favourite talks were those of Nick Appleyard who highlighted that without genuine impact and concrete use, innovation means very little, and, of course, the panel on Cross-Sector Perspective on Space Investment delivered by 6 of the most successful in the field who came together from across four continents was also a highlight. The event saw presenters from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration , European Space Agency - ESA, UK Space Agency, STFC, UK Ministry of Defence, UK Space Command, UAE Space Agency, NSSA and many more. What was the "Tomorrow Matters" investment conference I visited last week? It was a small event, based at the European Space Agency’s site in Didcot, with quality people that, I think, proved bigger doesn't necessarily mean better… There was just one room and a highly select group of purpose-driven investors (like Bill Liao from SOSV) and clean-tech start ups. The panels and presentations showed genuine passion, knowledge and thank goodness - some realistic ‘tough talk’. What did I gain from this? Apart from seeing inspiring pitches for some very cool new tech (an endless battery based on a missing bit of Einstein’s equations… eerrrrr…), a couple of thoughts spring to mind: 🔭 Firstly: important to hear Nick Lyth from Green Angel Ventures say that they are “all about the granular innovations that are required to create system change.” This is a key point - there is no one giant breakthrough technology that will save us. Well, apart from that infinite battery if it turns out to be real. With an amazing personal collection of Apollo Mission memorabilia in that room, it feels relevant to say that avoiding the climate catastrophe needs us all to achieve multiple 'moon shots' - in complex systems within energy, mobility, agriculture and industry. All of these need solutions to many many evolving and interrelated problems. It occurred to me that Venture Groups are in a unique position to co-ordinate some of this work (if only for the benefit of their own returns). 📣 Secondly, in contrast Andrei Xydas from Blume Equity confirmed that hardware businesses in deep tech are finding it harder to fund the gap between series A (proving) and B (scale-up) funding. VC’s see software and digital products as ‘less-hard’ to get over the line. Which is probably true. Because you don’t have physics punching you in the face while you try to build something. But let’s remember that, like it or not, we still exist in a real world with physics turned on, without which, even the best software is irrelevant. Anyway, kudos to Cosmonauts for putting on a good show and bringing together a really interesting group of people. And talking of "the best software"... Attending and speaking at the Global Agritech Investment Assembly - GAIA and Tomorrow Matters at the European Space Agency - ESA conference center last week was a fun and educational experience! Not only did we have constructive exchanges on necessary innovations in agriculture, we also talked about the advantages of corporate and venture partnerships. I was particularly impressed by the many startups with their sustainable and future-oriented business models. Physical well-being was also taken care of, with catering and snacks such as the delicious bars from One Good Thing wrapped in beeswax. Yesterday, I led a panel that discussed ´Scaling CleanTech Ventures´, at #tomorrowmatters Environmental Investment Conference held at the European Space Agency - ESA. I would like to thank my fellow Cornelia Frentz European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF), Mike Cooke Cooke ARYZTA, Stephen Lester and Camilla Rizzi Plug and Play Tech Center for their active participation and insights. The Cleantech sector is booming with US$30bn+ of venture funding raised in the year prior globally, with a strong latent demand in Europe for technology solutions to accelerate #energytransition. Several promising agri and clean tech start-ups showcased their technology in the last two days demonstrating both the potential and opportunity. My key takeaway from the panel for both investors and entrepreneurs is that ´what worked before may not work anymore´ with the tighter #funding environment and regulations. Therefore, being selective means #duediligence may need to be tighter to improve the success rate and returns. Investors and entrepreneurs need to think end-to-end (e.g. feedstock) and go beyond the fence line etc. #ESG reporting requirements are increasing for corporates and investors after recent legislation such as #ESRD. This may impact ventures despite being lower than the stated thresholds. #Cleantech remains and exciting place to be with a lot of opportunities in #Europe and the #UK
