The International Organisation for Standardisation (#ISO) is preparing the first #standard for #NetZero and is due to be introduced in late 2025, paving the way for significant impact on achieving net zero targets across the world! A working group has been set up of around 150 experts from across the #privatesector, academia, NGOs and #civil society – one of the ISO’s largest committees – to bring a wealth of #knowledge and expertise on the topic. The #newstandard will build upon the guidelines which were released by ISO in 2022 following the #COP27 meeting in Egypt. Some recommendations for the standard include promoting the use of #CircularEconomy processes such as product #refurbishment and #recycling materials as well as making more considerations towards all relevant #greenhouse #gas emissions for reductions. What is carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS)? Briefly speaking, it refers to systems that capture #carbondioxide (CO2) generated by #energy-intensive, industrial processes run on either fossil #fuels or #biomass. CCUS prevents the #co2 from entering the atmosphere where it contributes to #climatechange. If this is an area you are interested in finding out more about, then take a look at the newly published #TWIIN #faq - includes a brief history off CCUS, how current #technologies work, pros and cons, a look at the future and some examples of TWI projects involving CCUS. Congratulations to the partners responsible for the recently completed GeoSmart project: delivering smart and flexible #geothermal solutions! The aim of GeoSmart was to combine #thermalenergy storage solutions with flexible Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) solutions to provide a highly flexible, operational capacity for geothermal installations. This would create optimised, efficient geothermal #heat and #power systems, advancing the potential of this ‘always on’ #energy resource. To test the project’s innovations, two demonstration sites were chosen, each with their own unique requirements and challenges. Over its duration, GeoSmart has demonstrated that, although the capital costs of developing geothermal resources are high, due to drilling and exploration, the potential of geothermal is economically favourable because of the long operational life and low associated costs. For an in-depth look at GeoSmart, the technologies involved and the project consortium's achievements, read the following article in full: https://bit.ly/4eVkT9J #environmental #collaboratetoinnovate #TWIIN

The ARISE project: Novel paradigms and approaches towards artificial intelligence-driven autonomous robots, now has a website! This #horizoneurope funded project seeks to revolutionise the #energy and #agriculture sectors by leveraging #artificialintelligence / #ai and #robotics to usher in a new era of efficiency, productivity and #sustainability. Specifically it will address the needs of #solarpanel installation and maintenance, and the harvesting of #hydroponic lettuces, and include validation using five case studies including picking up and moving solar panels in collaboration with human workers, transplanting delicate lettuce pieces and repairing solar panel back-sheets with silicon-based sealants. These scenarios involve extremely diverse requirements in terms of long-sequence task accomplishment, complex, contact-rich manipulation and physical human-#robot interaction. The consortium partners are Hellenic Mediterranean University, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Technische Universität Darmstadt, ALSYMEX, Plaixus, Bendabl, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE INVESTIGACIONES CIENTÍFICAS, UBITECH, Probotica, Telekinesis, ELVAN, JEPCO, CEA-List and the Essex Innovation Centre (a partnership between the University of Essex and TWI), represented by TWI Hellas on the project.
