Bristol as a harbour city offers huge potential for low carbon heat sources. We currently operate England’s largest harbour-based water source heat pump at Castle Park Energy Centre, which has previously been awarded ‘Heat Pump City of the Year’ by the European Heat Pump Association. Today the team have been out on set filming the process of how water from the historic floating harbour is turned into hot water that heats thousands of homes in Bristol. We're delighted to see our trade body, The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) launch new Missions today, laying out its key areas of focus to support the government on its ambition to decarbonise the UK. Heat networks are an essential means of decarbonising heating and hot water on a city scale. As part of our goal of working for fossil freedom, we’re delivering low carbon heat to homes and businesses in Bristol, London and Midlothian, on the outskirts of Edinburgh - with the ambition to grow into new areas in the coming years. We are working with communities to deliver reliable and low carbon heat and ensure that all benefit from the transition to a resilient, low carbon energy system that supports local economic growth and wellbeing. We look forward to working with and supporting the ADE, the government and our fellow Heat Networks Industry Council members to help the UK achieve its net zero targets.
The ADE is delighted to announce that today, we launch our two new missions! ▶ Empowering Energy Demand ▶ Decarbonising British Heat We have launched these Missions because action must be taken now if the UK has any chance of reaching its net zero targets without breaking the bank. The two missions encapsulate solutions that can provide clean, cheap energy for the UK - we just need the transformational leadership from the Government to get us there. The Government has used its first few months in power to demonstrate their determination to deliver net zero, however, more is needed. What do we want these missions to achieve? Empowering Energy Demand involves embracing the value of a decarbonised, demand-led energy system, creating a future where households, businesses and industry are properly rewarded. Decarbonising British Heat involves transforming how UK homes and businesses are heated, for a future where heat is secure, clean and drives economic growth. The ADE and its members are already working hard to achieve this. Will you join us? Could the heat in our heat networks come from 3000m below ground? Our colleagues in the Netherlands are exploring how geothermal energy could join other heat sources to warm homes and businesses connected to the Amsterdam heat network. Alone, the use of geothermal energy in heat networks could meet up to 26% of the total built environment heat demand in the Netherlands. To capture geothermal heat, pipes extract water from up to 3000m underground – that’s over 200 double decker buses end-to-end – where temperatures reach 90 to 100 degrees Celsius. This naturally-heated water is pumped up to the surface and its heat transferred into the heat network. Despite its deep extension underground, typical geothermal plants only need a relatively small footprint on the surface – around that of a football pitch – making geothermal plants potentially suitable for use in dense cities. 𝗔𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘁𝗲, 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗸𝗼𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗻 We zetten een volgende stap om de stadswarmte van Amsterdam te verduurzamen. De Gemeente Amsterdam vraagt bij de provincie Noord-Holland namelijk subsidie aan om samen met ons en Energie Beheer Nederland nader seismisch onderzoek uit te voeren. Daarmee leren we meer over de geschiktheid van de diepe ondergrond in Amsterdam voor aardwarmtewinning. We gaan daarnaast met hen verder samenwerken om aardwarmte in de stad te ontwikkelen. In 2030 verwachten we de eerste aardwarmte te produceren voor het Amsterdamse warmtenet. Voor die tijd moet de juiste locatie voor een aardwarmtebron worden bepaald en de vereiste vergunningen verkregen worden. Ook in de Gemeente Lelystad en in de Gemeente Almere werkt Vattenfall aan aardwarmte. De mogelijkheden daar bekijken we samen met energie- en afvalbedrijf HVC en de beide gemeenten. #aardwarmte #geothermie

This weekend, Jon Sankey from our Bristol team hosted a talk at the Bristol Harbour Festival. Since 1971 the festival has been showcasing Bristol and its Harbour through activity that celebrates the past and offers a fresh perspective on the future. For the Bristol heat network, The Harbour is central to the future of decarbonising Bristol's heating and helping the city achieve its climate goals. At the festival's Talk Tent, Jon explained how the Harbour is heating homes via the Castle Park Energy Centre, England's largest water source heat pump. It was a pleasure to join in the celebration of Bristol and its Harbour, and help highlight how the Harbour continues to serve the Bristol community as part of its rich history.
