💧 Insights from the International Conference: "Past Achievements and Future Challenges of Applied Geosciences in Central Asia"💧 Held as part of the #ClimateWeek2024 initiative and the Five Years of Action for Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions for 2023-2027, this conference celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Central Asian Institute of Applied Geosciences (CAIAG). International Water Management Institute (IWMI) researchers Dr. Bunyod Holmatov and Dr. Shavkat Kenjabaev participated in a range of discussions during the event. Dr. Kenjabaev looked at the potential of Decision Support Systems (DSS). #DSS seeks to improve water allocation in the Naryn and Kara Darya catchments of the Syr Darya river basin, enhancing our understanding of water availability, demand, and allocation in this vital glacier-fed ecosystem. 📰 As the conference wrapped up, Dr. Kenjabaev was interviewed about IWMI's ongoing initiatives in the Ferghana Valley to the wide audience from the Kyrgyz Republic. #WaterResources #CentralAsia #WaterManagement #ClimateAction #WEACT #Sustainability

📰 News from the Region 📰 On September 30, the Water Sector Development Coordinating Council convened to address critical issues surrounding Kazakhstan's water resources. The Aral-Syrdarya basin, which borders Uzbekistan, is in a precarious state, reflecting the country's heavy reliance on transboundary resources. Alarmingly, the water volume in this basin has decreased by 38%, equivalent to 10.2 cubic kilometers. 🌍💧 Summer School Updates! On August 13-14, 2024, our partners from Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg held a 2-day Hydrological Modelling Summer School at CAIAG, Kyrgyzstan. Participants explored the SPHY model through hands-on sessions, learning how hydrological measurements help with model calibration and validation.
