Here's a summary of recent news on freight rate changes for exports from Vietnam: Increases: January 2024: Significant freight rate hikes, particularly to the US, EU, and Canada, due to shipping line rerouting to avoid the Red Sea turmoil. This resulted in cost increases like: West Coast US (LA): Up $800-$1,250 (compared to December 2023) Europe: Container rates doubled or even 5-6 times higher (in some cases) February 2024: Additional 20-40% increase in Terminal Handling Charges (THC fees) by foreign shipping lines, impacting Vietnamese exporters disproportionately compared to regional competitors. At the moment: May 2024: The Vietnam Maritime Administration expects continued high import-export freight rates, longer shipping times, and booking difficulties due to a lack of space for shipments. The main reason is the significant rise of freight cost from dry-containers from China & Thailand, leading to a rise of freight cost accordingly applied in Vietnam for competing with these countries. This trending will be expected to climb to a peak in June 2024, and would not be stabilized in anytime soon. Please be prepared.
