Many of us learn language through single words and then build on those words. We are analytic language learners. Some individuals, many autistic individuals, are Gestalt Language Processors. This means they learn language in chunks or phrases. Sometimes they are phrases heard frequently at home or from a favorite show. That phrase is then used to communicate the action or need the child connects with that phrase. You may need to investigate to determine the meaning of the phrase but it is important to understand!
