In 1973, a young filmmaker named George Lucas scribbled some notes for a far-fetched space-fantasy epic. Some forty years and 37 billion later, Star Wars–related products outnumber human beings, a growing stormtrooper army spans the globe, and “Jediism” has become a religion in its own right. Lucas's creation has grown into far more than a cinematic classic; it is, quite simply, one of the most lucrative, influential, and interactive franchises of all time. Yet incredibly, until now the complete history of Star Wars—its influences and impact, the controversies it has spawned, its financial growth and long-term prospects—has never been told.

In
How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, veteran journalist Chris Taylor traces the series from the difficult birth of the original film through its sequels, the franchise's death and rebirth, the prequels, and the preparations for a new trilogy. Providing portraits of the friends, writers, artists, producers, and marketers who labored behind the scenes to turn Lucas's idea into a legend, Taylor also jousts with modern-day Jedi, tinkers with droid builders, and gets inside Boba Fett's helmet, all to find out how Star Wars has attracted and inspired so many fans for so long.

Since the first film's release in 1977, Taylor shows,
Star Wars has conquered our culture with a sense of lightness and exuberance, while remaining serious enough to influence politics in far-flung countries and spread a spirituality that appeals to religious groups and atheists alike. Controversial digital upgrades and poorly received prequels have actually made the franchise stronger than ever. Now, with a savvy new set of bosses holding the reins and Episode VII on the horizon, it looks like Star Wars is just getting started.

An energetic, fast-moving account of this creative and commercial phenomenon,
How Star Wars Conquered the Universe explains how a young filmmaker's fragile dream beat out a surprising number of rivals to gain a diehard, multigenerational fan base—and why it will be galvanizing our imaginations and minting money for generations to come.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“It's impossible to overstate the cultural, social and even political impact of Star Wars. It started as a balm for a people racked by moral confusion, a juvenile bolt hole for a nation with shattered self-esteem, but the blast wave of enthusiasm and love it inspired was to engulf the planet. Culturally speaking it is, quite simply, the Force. Chris Taylor's affectionate and hugely entertaining book tracks the phenomenon from inception to dominance and with a wry smile, asks us to ‘look at the size of that thing!'”
—Simon Pegg, actor and Star Wars fan

“George Lucas didn't only create an iconic film franchise, but also a mind-virus that's infected the imaginations of billions of people around the world. Chris Taylor delivers an exuberant forensic analysis of the phenomenon in

—Ian Doescher, author of the William Shakespeare's Star Wars trilogy

“This is a wildly entertaining book, and if it's not the definitive history of the making of

Star Wars fan who wouldn't love this book…It really is hard to imagine a book about Star Wars being any more comprehensive than this one. There are plenty of books about Star Wars, but very few of them are essential reading. This one goes directly to the top of the pile.”

“A smart, engaging book...welcome reading for fans of
Star Wars—or, for that matter, of THX 1138.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“[A] terrific new book…”
—Huffington Post

“Here, finally, is a book that, in its very title, separates the tough from the wusses when it comes to exactly the kind of pop-culture consumption, digestion, regurgitation and entrail-reading that behan with George Lucas's space fairy tale. The amusingly hyperbolic (but serious) title, with its cheerily fevered (but serious) assumption of agreement with the premise and delightfully blinkered (but serious) conviction in the importance of the topic, distills everything one needs to know about the kind of insanely microresearched and breezily written book this is.”
—New York Times Book Review

“Exhaustive... [a] thorough account... those of us more casually in tune with the Force will find more than a few tasty nuggets.”
—Wall Street Journal

“At its heart,
How Star Wars Conquered the Universe is a love letter to a franchise that has become entrenched in contemporary culture in more ways than we could possibly count.... A history of the Star Wars franchise packed with trivia and anecdotes that will delight any fan.”
—Shelf Awareness for Readers

“An immensely readable look at the worldwide impact of the
Star Wars saga over the decades.”
—McClatchy

I just finished "How Star Wars Conquered The Universe" and thought I'd share my review.

I should preface my comments with the fact that while somewhat a fan of Star Wars (primarily of the original trilogy), I am by no means a 'fanboy', although I often walk in fanboy circles ( I work in the tech industry and there are any number of desks at my work covered in Star Wars paraphernalia

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, from beginning to end. To be honest, far more than I expected to. In terms of the history and creation of the movies, the book confirmed some things I had long assumed about the movies and George Lucas' concepts about them, however it surprised me about other things I didn't know about both how the movies came to be (and how big, or not so big a part Lucas, noted as "The Creator", played in what finally ended up on screen) has certainly cleared up a lot of my 'wtf?' questions about those darned prequels.

Best of all, it was very entertaining and well-written read. It took the details and gave them context and managed to put all of the disparate parts into a narrative that was as enjoyable to read as it was informative. I started off expecting to learn a little bit by reading what I assumed might be a somewhat dry tome of dates and factoids and by the end I was thoroughly entertained (um, maybe even more than I was when I watched "The Phantom Menace" - at least this had an interesting storyline and characters I could relate to..) as well as informed. When I finally finished and put the book down, I was very well satisfied and felt I had read a good story, well told.

Let me provide a little bit of background… I bought this book for my husband because he’s of the optimal Star Wars fandom generation. I grew up familiar with the movies thanks to my older brother and distinctly remember seeing the special editions and Episodes I-III in the theater. Neither of us would consider ourselves uber-fans or profess an undying devotion to the franchise, but I was curious about this cultural phenomenon. So…

What I enjoyed the most about this book was that it became an immersive experience, because as soon as I started reading about the Star Wars universe, I had to re-watch all of the movies. Though it was occasionally bogged down with the minutiae of every detail of George Lucas, his creative process, franchising, filming, his various companies, finances, et al, there were more interesting tidbits that I found intriguing. Example: “Elvis Presley… was in the process of securing a Star Wars print to screen for himself and Lisa Marie at Graceland the day before he died.”

I was most interested in how the story and the films evolved, first in Lucas’s brain, then to a more tangible thing. One of my favorite quotes pretty well defined Lucas’s attitude concerning his creation:

“I was afraid science fiction buffs would say things like ‘you know there’s no sound in space,’” Lucas said in 1977. “I just wanted to forget science.” In space, everyone can hear you go pew pew.

Of course, the influence Lucas had on pop-culture, science fiction movies (Aliens, Blade Runner, James Cameron, Tron, etc), and special effects is immense. “Alien is to Star Wars what the Rolling Stones were to The Beatles.” It’s fascinating how this one man had an idea, turned it into a vast collaborative empire, and made himself a billionaire through his creativity and ambition.

Until I started this book, it had been a long time since I hunkered down and read with the adult equivalent of a night-light (in this case, a back-lit Kindle) trying not to wake up my family.

I put myself in the category of super-nerd Star Wars fanboy, knowledgeable about what happened off screen as much as on. As such, one of the surprises of this book was that there were, well ... surprises. I appreciate the production insights and the thorough appendix of citations: anyone who contributes to Wikipedia's Star Wars articles or to Wookieepedia would be well-served by digging into them. Particularly nice is the discussion about Disney's Lucasfilm acquisition: to step away from Twitter and blogs and speculation and instead find something of a "curated" run-down was a nice relief.

And as much as I enjoyed that material, the interstitial fan and organization profiles were great, thoughtful, often funny -- and, despite the breadth of coverage, Taylor makes easy transitions and progresses the story to the near-present day. It seems he was listening to Pablo Hidalgo, who told a Disney conference audience that with Star Wars, what matters more than the story itself is how the story is told. Taylor very much has told the Star Wars story, thus far, in an engaging, lighthearted way.

One quibble, though, is that the book does have a few typos: e.g. a 12 instead of a 13 (or some such), missing prepositions here and there, a few just misspelled words. Not really detracting from understanding the underlying idea, but noticeable. I think I caught one or two factual errors "in-universe," i.e. about plot or details within the story. No biggy -- but, Angry Nerds be warned.

This book (the revised and expanded edition) just what I was looking for. I'm someone who knows all the behind the scenes stuff and facts. It got to the point where I'm just reading or hearing the same thr stuff over and over again. This book has so much stuff I did know or didn't know much of and goes into detail and back story. I knew about the struggle at the beginning with Lucas. I knew about some of the key players and Lucas's inspiration. But this goes on a deep dive into that. There's so much cool things that get brought to light that I didn't even know about. It's a great read and hard to put the book down. It goes through the very beginning in Lucas's life to episode 7. Must read for star wars fans.

I read this book until my eyes could not stay open any further each night, and awoke each morning wishing I could do nothing more than read this book.

A truly definitive history on the Star Wars universe and semi-biography of George "The Creator" Lucas Star Wars has never been more exposed and loved than it is herein. If you have enjoyed Star Wars even slightly more than the average person, this book is an exceptional undertaking of everything Star Wars.

Part History book, part Film book, with a dash of economics thrown in, all boiled down to a plethora of information that is not the size of a space station but the size of a moon!

If you like Star Wars, you'll end up loving Star Wars, if you love Star Wars, then go no further, this book is truly for us.

Thank you Chris Taylor for making this book for us and the universe that "The Creator" has given us which allowed this book to be written.
