NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK BY New York Times • Time • Marie Claire • Elle • Buzzfeed • Huffington Post • Good Housekeeping • The Week • Goodreads • New York Post • and many more!

“Powerful . . . A twisting tale of love, loss, and dark family secrets.”  — Paula Hawkins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Train and Into the Water

A poignant and suspenseful drama that untangles the complicated ties binding three women—two sisters and their mother—in one Chinese immigrant family and explores what happens when the eldest daughter disappears, and a series of family secrets emerge, from the New York Times bestselling author of Girl in Translation

It begins with a mystery. Sylvie, the beautiful, brilliant, successful older daughter of the Lee family, flies to the Netherlands for one final visit with her dying grandmother—and then vanishes.

Amy, the sheltered baby of the Lee family, is too young to remember a time when her parents were newly immigrated and too poor to keep Sylvie. Seven years older, Sylvie was raised by a distant relative in a faraway, foreign place, and didn’t rejoin her family in America until age nine. Timid and shy, Amy has always looked up to her sister, the fierce and fearless protector who showered her with unconditional love.

But what happened to Sylvie? Amy and her parents are distraught and desperate for answers. Sylvie has always looked out for them. Now, it’s Amy’s turn to help. Terrified yet determined, Amy retraces her sister’s movements, flying to the last place Sylvie was seen. But instead of simple answers, she discovers something much more valuable: the truth. Sylvie, the golden girl, kept painful secrets . . . secrets that will reveal more about Amy’s complicated family—and herself—than she ever could have imagined.

A deeply moving story of family, secrets, identity, and longing, Searching for Sylvie Lee is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive portrait of an immigrant family. It is a profound exploration of the many ways culture and language can divide us and the impossibility of ever truly knowing someone—especially those we love.

Searching for Sylvie LeeJean KwokWilliam Morrow, Jun 2019304 pagesGeneral Fiction, MysteryPurchased for Kindle app⭐⭐⭐⭐The cover is very interesting and I really like the way the water background creates a bit of eeriness. It transmits the mysterious tone of the book itself. I’m not usually a fan of script fonts such as this for a cover, but I think in this case it works well for imparting the energy of the story and the urgency of the search for the title character, Sylvie Lee.I found the story interesting. Amy Lee is the younger, homebody daughter of a Chinese immigrant family. Sylvie is the brilliant, outgoing, older daughter. Sylvie is married and has a successful career. Amy lives at home with her parents and works in the family dry cleaning business. Sylvie flies off to the Netherlands to visit the dying Grandmother, and she seems to simply disappear. Amy finally has to acknowledge that she will have to step outside her comfort zone and go to the Netherlands to try to track her sister. What happens once Amy arrives at the relatives’ home in the Netherlands tears the cover off of old family secrets and sets family members against family members and more. Eventually, all secrets are revealed and the family fortune is rediscovered. But getting to that point is a fast-paced twisty story that brings even Amy’s parents out of their secretive shells and endangers Amy’s life. At times the tension had me turning pages almost faster than I could read. Trigger subjects this book covers are bullying of people with disabilities and prejudice of culture and class even in a fairly tolerant society. There were some spots in the middle of the book that I got impatient with the pace and wanted more action on the mystery itself. Overall, though I found this to be a compelling read.I recommend this book for those of you who enjoy stories about “coming of age” type situations, late bloomers. I read this initially for one of my FB book groups but ended up really glad I had read just for myself.

"Searching for Sylvie Lee" by Jean Kwok was the book that led me back to being a dedicated reader! I loved this book!

This is a mystery because Sylvie is missing, but also reads like a family drama for it's deep dive into Sylvie's Chinese-American family dynamics. It's not about beautiful, successful Sylvie so much as it's about shy, stuttering younger sister, Amy hunting for her missing older sister, Sylvie. But it's definitely a "sister story"!

Because of so little money when Sylvie's parents first came to America from China, she spent the first nine years of her life living with extended family in the Netherlands. Her maternal grandmother was one of the relatives who cared for her during this time. Upon hearing that her grandmother was gravely ill, Sylvie immediately flew to the Netherlands to be at her beside to help care for her. Shortly after her grandmother's death Sylvie mysteriously disappears. Amy is chosen by her parents as the one to travel to the Netherlands to search for her sister.

What I loved about the writing of this novel were the chapters narrated in the first person through alternating perspectives of Sylvie before she disappeared, Amy while she is searching for her sister and Ma as she saw her life before and after coming to America.

We hear the deep bond between the two sisters, how deeply they loved one another, often only having each other. But there is so much they don't tell each other - each of the sisters holds the other in high regard while thinking very little of themselves - each wants to be more like the other - each one feels the other sister is more loved. All remains hidden, never spoken about, never shared with the other sister.

As Amy searches the family secrets continue to surface, the suspicious characters pile up and the mystery about Sylvie's disappearance continues to mount.....

I highly recommend this book!

“It is sad how trauma gets passed down from generation to generation. Helena, my own ma and pa: They taught us to keep our heads low, to hold our secrets as closed as an oyster. Keep ourselves apart from everyone else. At a certain point, you wind up dividing yourself internally into so many different people you do not even know who you are anymore.” The author, Jean Kwok makes a valid point in her novel, “Searching for Sylvie Lee” about family secrets. Every family has them and they are toxic to everyone who is expected to keep them. In this breathtaking novel about generations of lies and deceit you find the horrific results years later in the toll that is extracted on the youngest members of the family. Tragic consequences when truths are finally revealed. Everyone is to blame and yet, it all seems so unnecessary. To live is to make mistakes. That is a given. But to try to hide mistakes creates ruinous results. It’s all so crushing to the soul when the truth is ultimately exposed. Sylvia Lee and her sister, Amy Lee, are the main protagonists to this story of family betrayals. A beloved Grandmother tries to keep it all together but upon her death, chaos reigns with horrific ramifications. Set within the countries of the United States and the Netherlands, we see an extended Chinese family trying to survive as immigrants in lands that belittle their accomplishments. But their accomplishments are not what drive the story…it is their faults. This was an extraordinary book and beautifully written. I was hanging on every detail until the last page. As I read, I was going to give this book a 4, but it was all dependent on the ending. The ending was fitting and realistic, but sad and a little anticlimactic. It all just seemed to go downhill, descending inexorably into tragedy and sadness and regret. It made me not so happy about the book.
Otherwise, I was delighted originally to find it so readable. Easy to get into. Changing dates and point of view, as always-----and WHEN will this fad end??----were confusing, but not impossible. I think the most surprising part was that very little of the book took place in New York, but rather in the Netherlands! Chinese in the Netherlands? A little disconcerting, but also educational. I learned things about the Dutch character, the bicycle riding, the open windows... and it turns out the author lives in the Netherlands now. A good little mystery.

I really enjoyed this story, and the blend of characters. It is the story of family love, secrets and mysteries. Sylvie Lee, the oldest child in a small family returns to the Netherlands where she has been raised until she was a pre teen. Her maternal grandmother is dying, and Sylvie Lee would like to say her goodbyes. As the story deepens, it takes a number of turns, and when Sylvie Lee disappears, Sylvie Lee's younger sister, Amy, travels there as well to find her. The story is well-written, and the mystery deepens as we learn what happened. No spoilers here. While I gave this a 5, be forewarned there is some need to get used to the story's format, who the characters are (for instance, Sylvie Lee's grandmother is also "grandmother" to Lucas, although in this case "grandmother" signifies a close, older family friend). There is also the tendency to reference characters by Chinese names such as Snow Jasmine (Sylvie Lee). All in all, I learned more about Chinese and Dutch culture, and did not see the twists coming. I enjoyed it enough to try another of her books.

This was such a well written novel that I just enjoyed that part at first but I had to get quite far into the book before I realized this story might be so much more than I expected.
The chapters are headed by the character in the book whose turn it is to tell their side of the story. Basically this is about a missing person by the name of Sylvie Lee, who is ethnic Chinese, born in the U.S.A., shipped to the Netherlands as a baby and left there to be brought up by relatives until she is nine years old. She is then returned to the U.S. and now in the hands of her Chinese/American parents once again. She attends school and then university and becomes quite accomplished in her field. She marries a white American but does not raise a family. She returns to the Netherlands when her grandmother on her mother' side takes ill and dies. After her Grandmother's death she was to return to the U.S. but after she leaves and is never seen again and does not arrive home to the States.
Her loving sister Amy decides she must find Sylvie and leaves for the Netherlands as she speaks both Chinese and English but not Dutch. Amy meets her relatives, her mother's younger sister, Helena and her uncle and some cousins who help her in the search for Sylvie.
At times the book seemed to go over the same information too many times by each of the main characters. But nearing the end of the story the plot takes a turn and things get very exciting and totally unexpected.
The writing is superb and the author Jean Kwok deserves all the acclaim she has received for writing it.

Some twists and one that you end up figuring out somewhere earlier but the end does not still go in the direction you think even with this guess.

It also demonstrates the difference between perceived outwardly strength and inner core strength

My first book by this author, as recommended by the author Jane Green, in her summer reading list. I loved the book and finished it over 2 days. It was really emotional and gripping.

The first thing that disturbed me was that some portions of the book are written in an English that mimicks Chinese and Dutch, e. g. referring to China as the "Central Kingdom" or saying "It causes me regret" instead of "I'm sorry".

What weighs more heavily is that the persons in the book didn't really come alive for me, they stayed flat. That made for a read that was not enjoyable at all. I am glad for the author that she is so successful but I fail to see what everyone praising this book has seen in it.

Initially this novel, situated in America and Holland, was interesting and moderately gripping with occasional literal translations of Chinese sayings, but the book degenerates into a florid, melodramatic, overwritten mess with vast, almost unintelligible, quantities of the translated Chinese aphorisms. Skimmed to the lurid and sentimentalised denouements and epilogue. Very disappointing.
