The two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of W. E. B. Du Bois from renowned scholar David Levering Lewis, now in one condensed and updated volume

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois―the premier architect of the civil rights movement in America―was a towering and controversial personality, a fiercely proud individual blessed with the language of the poet and the impatience of the agitator. Now, David Levering Lewis has carved one volume out of his superlative two-volume biography of this monumental figure that set the standard for historical scholarship on this era. In his magisterial prose, Lewis chronicles Du Bois's long and storied career, detailing the momentous contributions to our national character that still echo today.
W.E.B. Du Bois is a 1993 and 2000 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction and the winner of the 1994 and 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Biography.

I was not familiar with David Lewis’s two volume Pulitzer Prize winning biography of W.E.B. Du Bois so this condensed one volume version is all I have to go on. For this reader the book was incredibly eye-opening. I was vaguely aware of Du Bois as an important figure in African-American history but, like many others of my generation, the connotation I had was skewed by the negative rhetoric in the popular view of him in the last part of his life. But his last twenty years out of 95 are a blip on the radar screen of his life. Even if, as most of his NAACP former colleagues did, one disagrees with his ideas in this last stage of his life, no one who actually knows the full life of Du Bois can be anything but deeply impressed by the leadership he showed in the face of post-Reconstruction Jim Crow racism. This heavily detailed book will show the reader Du Bois’s life like nothing else available on the market. Lewis never shies away from Du Bois’s foibles and failures as a human being but what Du Bois achieved in his lifetime is unforgettable and laid the groundwork for the contemporary civil rights movement.

Lewis takes a massive amount of material and presents it to the reader in a cogent, easily readable fashion. Through 714 pages of text my interest never flagged. Lewis’s writing skills are a major reason. Chapters are well-organized, transitions (so important in Du Bois’s life) are stylistically well done and the prose is fluid and easy to follow. The book is a project in the sense that there is so much here but not in the sense of having to wade through boring material. Du Bois was never boring and neither is Lewis’s writing. Lewis brings to light what Du Bois dealt with in his lifetime, e.g., the number and reality of lynchings by groups of men, women and children done to other men, women and children, including in some cases the burning of bodies and the public display of body parts. The hatred and effects of racism are palpable in this book but it is simply reporting by Lewis of what happened in post-Reconstruction Jim Crow America and what Du Bois was so vehemently fighting against. Du Bois was trained as a sociologist and historian, was the first African-American to get a doctorate from Harvard, and was one of the founders of the NAACP. Through Lewis’s writing, Du Bois’s life and concerns take the reader through the African-American experience from the last third of the 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. Besides being a first-rate biography the book itself is a tour de force of historical writing.

One hardly has to agree with everything Du Bois said and did to appreciate this book. To anyone who takes the time to read this biographical masterpiece, the results will give the reader a much different perspective on many of the major events in Du Bois’s time. That shift in perspective is something any major biography of an important figure should do. This book is well worth taking the time to explore.
