hdmi to displayport cable display port dvi adapter dp

Product Description

With the Plugable DisplayPort to HDMI Active Adapter (DP-HDMI), convert the DisplayPort output on your device–laptop, desktop, tablet, docking station–to HDMI. Now you’re ready to connect to virtually any HDMI-enabled display.

How important is an Active Adapter? Active Adapters use an integrated chipset to convert the DisplayPort signal from the computer to an HDMI signal. The Plugable adapter supports resolutions up to 4K (3840x2160) 60Hz on displays with Standard Dynamic Range (SDR), and 4K 30Hz with High Dynamic Range (HDR) capable displays.

Applications

  • Connect an HDMI-equipped display to a DisplayPort-equipped device
  • Connect additional HDMI displays to AMD Eyefinity or NVIDIA Surround capable graphics cards
  • Small and sturdy, so it can go where you go

In the Bag

  • Plugable DisplayPort to HDMI Active Adapter

Please note that an HDMI cable is not included.

Compatibility

Compatible Setups Compatible with PC laptops, desktops, tablets, or DisplayPort docking stations that have a full-sized DisplayPort output port to add a HDMI-capable monitor, TV, or projector
In order to display a 4K resolution the host's graphics processor and attached display need to be 4K capable
Incompatible Setups This adapter is not bi-directional and will not convert video in the other direction
Not compatible with HDR (requires HDMI 2.0b or HDMI 2.1)
Refresh rate may be limited to 30Hz on 4K HDR televisions

What is an active adapter? How is it different from a passive adapter?

An Active DisplayPort adapter has an integrated circuit to convert a DisplayPort signal to HDMI, DVI, or VGA. DisplayPort uses a different digital signaling type than HDMI and DVI (which use the same type), both of these signaling types are very different from VGA's analog signal.

Passive adapters rely on the graphics controller to selectively deliver the correct graphics signal using the DisplayPort output. Generally, this leads to reduced resolution or refresh rate compared to Active Adapters. Additionally using passive adapters may limit the number of connected displays in AMD Eyefinity and NVIDIA Surround setups.

Why doesn't this work with HDR 4K televisions?

HDR or HDR10 is a new technology that requires additional color and brightness data to be transmitted from the computer to the display. This requires the host computer to support DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0b or HDMI 2.1, our adapter is designed for SDR (non-HDR) displays and converts from DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 and is incompatible with the HDR specification.

When connected to an HDR television, the television will attempt to enable HDR over the connection even though it is not supported causing reduced refresh rate or image quality. Some televisions provide options to disable HDR but most will enable and prioritize HDR over image quality and refresh rate.

DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.0b, 4K@60hz HDR10 -- if that is what you want, this does it
I have a Quadro P600 (only decent used card not scalped in 2020-21) which only has mini-displayport outputs on it. I hooked it up to my 4K HDTV with HDR10 support and was expecting to get, well, 4K and HDR10.Instead I got 1080p with HDR. Turns out my DP to HDMI adapter only does 1080p.After wondering what the difference could be for displayport -> hdmi adapters and cables costing between $5 and $50, I did some research. The displayport signal and the HDMI signal are completely different, but because it was designed to be cross-compatible early on, a displayport can output HDMI (pass-through) and an adapter only has to do some work changing voltages and passing the signal (so called 'passive' adapters). However, that was early on. Now that every bit of bandwidth is needed for the huge UHD signal, there is no way that you can pass through full 4K 60hz on the same port. This is why there are 'cheap' adapters and 'not cheap' adapters. What is the difference between the adapters that do 4K@30hz and 4K@60hz and 4K@60hz with HDR?Since there is no longer an easy HDMI signal to grab and adapt, the adapter has to completely translate the displayport language into hdmi as it goes into the cable and as it comes out. Thus, there is going to be a difference between low-end and mid-end and high-end adapters because they each have tiny computers inside of them doing a lot of work, and some do more than others, and some do better, etc.Realizing that this adapter is going to be the middle-man controlling whether the image is good, or smooth, or doesn't work sometimes, etc, I did some research and found that this (plugable) was a decent brand, and the adapter did what I needed, and the price was agreeable, and there was overnight shipping. So, I got it.What can I say? I works, I am happy. If you need a 4K 60hz HDR capable displayport to hdmi adapter, then this looks to be the sweet spot for price/quality.

I've been using an old Lenovo Tiny M715q as my HTPC (Home Theater PC), but the version I have doesn't have the HDMI output option. So it only has DisplayPort outputs. I tried DP->HDMI Cable and two other DP->HDMI adapters, but they were all limited 60Hz. This one works with 120Hz. Perfect!

I needed a DP to HDMI adapter that would support DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST). This one worked for me where several others did not. My understanding is that MST implementations are finicky, and it may take trying lots of different alternatives to get one to work. So this may or may not work for you. My specific configuration is an HP EliteBook G5 laptop that has Intel Iris Xe graphics. I'm using the DP over USB-C from the laptop to attach to a Dell UltraSharp U2723QE monitor as the first display in an MST daisy-chain. The second and only other monitor in the daisy chain is attached with this adapter to the DP-Out port on the Dell monitor. That monitor is an an HDMI-only Eyoyo (yeah, I know) EY-ZB0406MG 5" 800x480 monitor that I'm using for a small above-screen teleprompter. Passive DP-to-HDMI cables definitely won't work (they can't decode the MST, obviously) and I tried at least the CableMatters 102021 Active DP to HDMI adapter. That one sort-of worked, but I had to toggle MST on the Dell monitor off and on again each time I connected to the display or else the HDMI monitor's display was garbled. (It looked like the signal to the HDMI monitor looked like it was out-of-sync/phase, or wrong bit-depth... something was not right. You could make out some images, but no way usable.) So that was no good. This one worked flawlessly with my setup. Your mileage may vary, but for me, this did the trick. Don't do many reviews, but since I couldn't find any adapters willing to say that, yes, they have a robust DP MST implementation, thought I'd share in the hopes this helps someone else. Good luck!

Adapter does not transmit Boot up screens, i.e. the PC BIOS screens that display when computer is turned on. Only after the operating system loads and switches into graphics mode is there anything shown. I tried this on multiple computers, multiples OS's (Windows, Linux and macOS) and multiple monitors (1080, 2K), so I know it is not my equipment. So, basically you can't see anything during boot or configure anything in the BIOS. Ironically, a tried an inexpensive PASSIVE adapter from Wal*(&t and it has no issues transmitting images from the moment the computer turns on, but that adapter is limited to 1080p. So this weekend, when I needed to configre the BIOS, I had to first connect the inexpensive adapter, make my changes, shut down, then attach the Plugable adapter then restart. Returning this adapter first thing Monday.

UPDATE: Dec 31, 2019. I changed rating from 1 to 4 stars. Plugable support contacted me and the technical explanation was understandable. It isn't so much a defect in the product as a confluence of factors between graphic cards, monitors and computers. I would STILL recommend an active adapter over a passive one; with the exception of not seeing boot up screens (which won't effect everyone), active adapters solve more issues than cause. Once booted, the adapter was fantastic, rock solid 2K. Most users probably don't need to be able to see boot up/POST screens, if so, then this adapter is still a good choice. In my case, most of my systems are dual boot, so being able to see the boot up/BIOS/POST screens is necessary.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Perfetto per 4k 60hz su amd r9 390
