DROID X Does… Bankrupt Blockbuster App?

While the Motorola DROID X is generating serious buzz and desire (if you can find one), one of their marketing partners isn’t fairing anywhere as well.  Blockbuster Video has been in talks with its creditors and six major motion picture studios and is planning to declare bankruptcy in mid-September.  The Chapter 11 reorganization would allow the flailing video-rental company to get out of its least advantageous leases, and it plans on closing over 500 stores.  Last year Blockbuster closed over 1,000 of their rental outlets.  Clearly the walk-in video-rental business is going the way of the buggy whip and the cathode ray monitor.

So what is Motorola going to do about its marketing campaign featuring the Blockbuster online movie rental app on its flagship DROID X?  Blockbuster’s woes may mean it won’t get as many new movie releases, or that they’ll cost more.  Will Motorola or Verizon cut their losses and back away from any more Blockbuster love?  This is hardly the brand to tie their powerful smartphone to, let alone stick with an ad that concludes, “Pre-loaded with Blockbuster.  The next generation of Does.”

More like the next generation of Was.
