Engadget has another exclusive: they’ve found out about a new Motorola Android phone for AT&T Wireless. This model MB520 seems to be called the Kobe, and they found it by noticing that it showed up in two certification websites. The Kobe quietly showed up at UPnP Forum (in June) and then at WiFi Alliance in July. Then a trusted source provided a bit more detail.
The above photo is a view of the phone’s status. Looks like it’s running Android 2.1. There’s an interesting divergence of opinion on the phone’s form factor; Engadget calls it a slate, while IntoMobile uses the term “candy bar.” Hmmm. Alas, there are no pictures of the phone, just some specs and benchmarks. But here’s what a DROID X, which is definitely slate-shaped, would look like if it were proportioned like a candy bar.
The Kobe’s got a 3.5 inch LCD screen, its CPU is a TI OMAP processor running 800 MHz (compare with the DROID X and DROID 2’s 1 GHz), 512 megabytes of RAM, and 2 gigabytes of internal storage. A 2 GB microSD storage card is included. The camera is 3 megapixel, but no flash. The UI is a Motoblur skin, and software includes the SWYPE keyboard, Vlingo speech-to-text, and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) support.

A little bit below the DROID X, a little more above the Samsung Galaxy S (sold as the Samsung Captivate at AT&T). Interestingly, the Captivate is otherwise the more tricked-out phone with its 1 GHz processor, 5 MP camera, 720p video, and 4 inch Super AMOLED display.
Anyway, good to see AT&T getting another Android contender.
