Have you gotten that leaked Android 2.2 (Froyo) build onto your Motorola DROID X yet? You may have waited too long. Motorola is sending out cease and desist letters to sites hosting the leaked Froyo files. Here’s what My Droid World found waiting for them in the inbox:
Pursuant to 17 USC 512(c)(3)(A), this communication serves as a statement that:
(1). I the duly authorized representative of the exclusive rights holder Motorola for Droid X Keyboard Software, know as “repackaged-signed.apk”
The follow URL contains the software which we have confirmed as Motorola Copyrighted Software

So, Android itself is open source, but some of the build does contain Motorola copyrighted material (like that UI that keeps getting in the way), and some of it is Google’s mobile interface that’s also copyright. (You may recall that’s how Augen got into a little spot of trouble.)
I’m sure someone can point to the Library of Congress ruling that says we have the right to mod our phones, but asking a site to take down copyrighted material (even if the asker only owns some of the copyright) is another situation.
MyDroidWorld says they complied with the letter (hence the redacted sites above), but there may be some mirrors still out there. I was easily able to find one via a link from IntoMobile simply by googling “Droid X Froyo image.” IntoMobile received the same Cease and Desist letter.
The official DROID X Over the Air (OTA) upgrade from Android 2.1 to 2.2 is currently scheduled for “late summer.”
