Huawei Technologies announced a new Android phone for those on a budget. But, surprise! It’s running Android OS 2.2, also known as Froyo. This tasty and colorful treat called the Huawei Ideos is truly a mass-market device, expected to retail for $150. And it’s definitely the first mass-market phone to ship running the latest version of Android.
The announcement at IFA caught us by surprise, as everyone expected Huawei to announce a high-end phone that they had developed with Google. The Google partnership aspect was correct, the Google logo is even on the back of the handset. But there’s nothing high about the Ideos. It has a low-resolution (240 x 320), small (2.8 inch) capacitive (whew!) screen. It has a smaller (3.2 megapixel) camera image, a slower (528 MHz) processor, not that much (256 MB) memory, 512 MB of ROM, limited (7.1 Mbps) HPSA capability. It has Wifi 802.11n, Bluetooth, GPS and room for external storage with its microSD card slot.
Huawei notes the phone will update to the latest version of Android OS automatically. Since it runs stock Android, there’s no need to wait for a user interface upgrade.
Huawei admits their company name is difficult for English speakers and is going to use the Ideos brand for more handsets for European and North American markets. Ideos is actually an acronym for Industrial Design, Evolution and Operating System.
