While Acer made its tablet announcement in New York last Tuesday, there was also further discussion of their Liquid Metal smartphone.  Both AT&T and T-Mobile are considering the handset for their networks, according to the president of Acer’s smartphone unit.  Aymar de Lencquesaing, speaking at a press conference in New York City, mentioned the US carriers during a Q&A session.  He also noted that Rogers in Canada will carry the Liquid Metal.

As this is a GSM phone, AT&T and T-Mobile are the likely nationwide carriers to distribute it, as the other two large carriers use the CDMA protocol.

Originally announced in September for a UK release that still hasn’t occurred, the phone actually debuted in France.  Since then the phone was spotted for FCC testing with AT&T’s radio frequencies.

Specs on the Liquid Metal include an 800 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.6-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, a 5 MP camera, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n; DLNA/UPnP support, for media sharing; and Dolby Surround Sound.  It also features an LED display on top of the phone showing incoming messages and missed calls, as well as battery charge level.

The Liquid Metal will be available in both silver and brown.  Running Android OS 2.2 (Froyo), it also will have Acer’s proprietary Breeze user interface and an app called Social Jogger that handles Facebook and Twitter updates through a dedicated widget.
