Viewsonic has let it leak that their upcoming Viewpad 4 will be releasing with Android 2.4 in April. This announcement comes as manufacturers have yet to update their phones to Android 2.3. This essentially means that 2.3 is pretty much a dead upgrade and 2.4 should be the OS version that phones are upgraded to. It seems that Google knows this as Android 2.4 is keeping the Gingerbread name.
According to our source, the release date of version 2.4 has been brought forward to ensure that dual-core apps designed for Honeycomb (v3.0) will be able to work with single-core devices running v2.4.
The only real change from 2.3 to 2.4 is the ability for single core devices such as Google’s Nexus S, to be able to run apps designed for dual-core/Honeycomb (Android 3.0). This news is supposedly the reason why manufacturers have not upgraded to 2.3 where that support is not present.
We’ve just gotten word from a trusted source that Google has begun building a new branch of code – being called GRI17 (Gingerbread post-Honeycomb, aka “Ice Cream”) – that aims to bring some of the new elements found in Honeycomb over to phones.
Some sources have stated that Ice Cream will be android 3.1 and a tablet version as opposed to 2.5 and the new smartphone variant. Needless to say whatever the name turn out to be Google is working on the next smartphone iteration of Android and plans to bring a few key enhancements from Honeycomb along with it.
