In a recent interview with IDG News Service, Asustek CEO Jonney Shih mentioned a “secret weapon” to compete with iPad 2 that has us all quite intrigued. Shih was very vague, only stating that they “very carefully chose” the processor for this device — the NVIDIA Tegra 2 — and that it will not be shown until closer to launch time. When asked for more info, Shih simply replied “I think it’s best not say now. You will to wait until the launch.”

Shih went on to talk about the future, cloud computing, and 3D technology, which could provide more insight as to what this new device could be.

He noted that there are three primary platforms for mobile computing – iOS, Android, and Windows – and since we know that this device will be in direct competition with the iPad 2, it’s safe to assume that Asus has chosen the mortal enemy of Apple’s mobile brand, our beloved Android.

At the end of the interview, when asked the question “what trends will fail this year?” Shih gave an interesting, possibly insightful answer. “People actually talk a lot about 3D with the glasses, for the TV, and I don’t think that will prevail; Maybe it is possible in a smaller device and without wearing glasses.”

Could this point to a 3D Android device from Asus within the next few weeks? Something tells me that we may just find out at Mobile World Congress.
